Hello All,As a newbee to all this and not having a ibiza cupra 8v for very long so know nothing about it yet i was wondering if anyone could tell me about a headlight problem i have noticed,it has the seperate main beam and high beam in one unit, but you all prob. know that already, that the metal defuser, i suppose you could call it, that sits infront of the main beam bulb, looks like a little cup on a stalk, has fallen off and now sits in the light unit itself,so,after all that waffleing,is there any way i can open up the unit and put it back on,or do i have to get another unit and is it easy to do,many thanks.http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/images/smilies/help.gif

Well I would give it a go, but I think you'll need a new GTI headlamp.

If you use a heatgun, you should be able to loosen the sealant around the glass and then prise it off.

The headlamp is held on by 3 bolts, one above the headlamp and 2 below. Remove the indicators, undo the bolts that hold the grille on (there are 2 hidden below where the indicators go) and you should be able to get it out.

There's no F in Quality..
I tried to remove the glass from an old Gti headlamp and found it to be an absoute nightmare.... managed to do it, but only by destroying the unit.....

there's was no way the unit would be able to be re-attached to the glass

I'd done it to send the glass to a mate who had cracked his glass....

Worth giving it a try though, nothing to loose !!!!

This can be fixed without removing the glass but it is very fiddly and you have to be extremely patient -
Remove the headlamp and disconnect the electric adjustment motor
Take out all bulbs being careful not to touch the glass
Remove the bulb holders held in with star/torx screws.
This gives limited access which should be (just) enough room to get a pair of long-nosed pliers into the aperture.
Hold the lamp above you with the back of the unit downwards and gently shake to get the anti-glare metal cup in a position so that you can grip the long cente section with the pliers.
If there is insufficient space betweent the glass and the plastic internal to move the glare shield, use the knurled white plastic adjusters to move the internals
It is then possible to clip the shield back into the two plastic runners which are at the base of the reflective plastic internals inside the lamp
Using a bent paperclip apply a blob or two of araldite or similar to the base of the metal shield and the two plastic runners it sits in.
Done this on four GTI headlights now & had no further problems.
Fiddly but cheap!

I used this method also!

After a while heat or vibrations weakened the glue and it fell off again!
Ended up replacing the Unit with a new one SEAT anyway due to a seperate issue of fogging/condensation. IIRC it was about £50!

Will it fail the MOT with this part off? Mine came off two weeks ago and Ive been planning to work on it when the weather improves...

Unfortunately it may do - depends if the operator notices and if it is considered to be a defect or impair the headlights performance. No point taking any chances as a re-test will cost almost as much as a new unit! Worth keeping an eye on fleaBay...

Headlight Issues

I tried the fiddly option but nearly ended up throwing the unit out the window.

Am I being daft but if I removed the diffuser and then placed a stick type diffuser i.e. a small circle froster sticker would that have the same effect??

you can melt the glue. Done it on Polo ones to tint the insides ;)

Remove ALL plastic parts on them, not too sure what plastic bits there are but they've gotta go. whack it in the oven on about gas 9 for 5mins, take out and try to prise apart. Pretty certain they will require at least 10mins but just keep checking!!
