Cupra vs. Evo 5

Got to say my Tommi Mak was one of the most fun cars to drive I've owned and been in. It's not the same kind as car as an LCR. If you want a toy, or can afford and want to spend alot of money running an Evo then they're fantastic. But the LCR is a great quick everyday/small family road car.
Forget comparing straightline speed, at the end of the day the better car is the one that brings the biggest smile to your face. Depends what you want out of a car!

Agree with this comment.

Although I never had a problem with my Evo 7 it came with thousands and thousands of pounds worth of reciepts for servicing and modding. Since selling my Evo the buyer has contacted me about the gearbox playing up as the syncro is on it's way out so e replaced it and now the starter motor isn't working

It was running 360bhp - 340lb/ft @ 1.3bar so it wasn't under much stress but it didn't half shift!!! As for even comparing it to a LCR with or without a remap is just silly. Around the bends there is nothing to really keep with the Evo and the straightline speed will also kill most things. Only place where the LCR will stand a chance is on a 30mph - 70mph sprint.

As Kev said it's a lot of fun but very expensive!!! I was getting around 14-16mpg on motorway driving for 300+ miles a week ... It's NOT an everyday car :headhurt:

LCR gives thrills / economy / good looks and not much will touch a Revo'd LCR 'bang for buck'.

A long way? Track and 0-60 then yes but straight line speed i dont think so;)

4wd 280bhp is nothing special at all nowadays, 270bhp fwd car will hold on if not out accelerate in a straight line no probs.

Impreza/evo owners get overwhelmed by the pull that their car has in 1st and 2nd gear and then relate this performance to the rest of the gearing (myself included) It gives you a false sense of your cars overall straight line performance. (lotus elise anyone)
I had a 290hp classic impreza and pull in 1st/2nd was immense. LCR doesn't have this 1st/2nd gear pull because of traction limits but 3rd upwards it would leave my old impreza no probs.

I took my brother out in my LCR for the 1st time last week and 1st thing he said to me was, its not as fast as your old impreza is it[:@] The reason because is, he remembers the 1st/2nd gear pull i had in the impreza. My car, just doesn't have that same effect now.

They're excellent off the lights/1/4mile/ around the track etc but i dont really rate them for straight line speed, say 30-140mph. The new breed of remapped hot hatches, VXR/ST/S3/LCR/Cupra/Gti etc should hold on straight line speed wise to <320bhp evos/imprezas.

I have an LCR with Stage 2 Revo, my mate has an Evo IV and after his engine rebuild (standard BHP) when going from a rolling start (20mph) i slowly pulled away from him. From a standing start i don't think i would catch him to overtake.
My brother has an Evo V with 313 bhp (atm ;)) and i have no hope against him.
All in all the evo will be quicker if given the same mods.
Plus the looks you get in an Evo is worth the servicing costs.

Well i was talking standard vs standard. mini with a haybusa engine vs a lcr. mini wins in a straight line.If your spending 1k on each car then it's a different story.A standard evo(280bhp) feels no faster then a remapped lcr in a straight line i definetly agree but as a all round package and "performance car" it's a mile better. As a bit of a former 1/4 junkie the best lcr i ever saw did a 14.0@101mph,james i believe and his was a genuine 280bhp.

Think James's best so far is 13.8@ 101, still pretty pants in the scheme of things when comparing against similar evos/imprezas etc but i think you'll agree, high powered FWD cars and 1/4 mile strips are not a good combination;)

Yeah, mod the evo and your back at square 1 again.

Lets take the 60ft time off the 1/4 time and compare.fair ?I've got my ass kicked by enough evos to know what they can do.

60ft, 2.3 in LCR vs what in Evo? 1.6? (0.7secs advantage just in the 60ft)

LCR still doesn't have full traction at 60ft marker, can still spin up to end of 2nd before getting power down.

Take the 60ft times off...

James 13.8-2.3 =11.5secs
EvoFQ 320? 13secs? -1.6 =11.4secs

Just complete guessing here for the evo so please correct me if im wrong, but thats what james would have been doing in his LCR:)

james i reckon 2.1/2.2, evo 1.8/1.9 =0.4-0.2 advantage. I'm certain james was a 13.9xx and only just a 13.

.

Posts like this really get on my nerves ... Why would you compare a standard car to a modified one? and why limit the cars performance to just straight line speed? My girlfriend has enough skill to race anything in a straight line. But give her a bend and she hits the brakes (hope she doesn't come on here)

Take an Evo around a Track and compare it to a LCR and you'll have the Evo winning. Take a modified Evo against a modified LCR and again the Evo will win. ;)

As for the prices of tuning an Evo look here.

If people get kickes from keeping with an STi/Evo from 30-70 then great but the only person who can show an Evo what a 1.8T can really do is Bill. He is well known/respected on MLR and are all quite aware of the potential of 1.8T's (1.9T in Bills case).

Straight line racing is for girls
Twisties are for men

Jap compared to something European is a different league. I have a LCR and that is deemed a very quick and capable car, if you send one to Japan it would be laughed at. On the other hand a Evo 5/6/7/8/9 over here is classed as a affordable super (saloon) car. Yet having a friend that owns one, its basically a money pit, tyres, pads, discs, filters, and the like all need to be changed at a minimum of 5k, yet a LCR will happily poodle along for 10-20k stretches at a time with only tyres, pads to worry about.
As a track day weapon or weekend play mobile a Evo is definately a head and shoulder above a LCR but for practicality and ease of use the Leon is a winner.

Probably the only reason I wouldn't buy another one (money pit). Hard to say if it's the most fun you can have on 4 wheels as a tuned elise/exige is pretty good.

Next car I'll get will be a high milage/engine damaged elise ... Then the fun part will be the 2.0VTEC with a S/C :D Awesome for the weekends/tracks. Same as the atom really but a little more civilised.

And what % of the british driving population track their cars? Would it be less than 1% by any chance;)

Never been on a track and never will but if i ever had the option, it wouldn't be in something with mountains of turbo lag;)

95% of my driving consists of motorways, so straight line speed is impotant to me. Im never on country roads much tbh and even when i am, im not silly enough to go round blind bends at 100mph;)

So to me and im sure plenty of others will agree, straight line speed is far more important than how a car can perform around a track. Its totally irrelevant in my eyes as such a tiny minority buy a car for this reason.

There are plenty of 1.8t that will show evos a pair of heels, lots of IHI cars running around now:)

Think some people are forgetting 4wd comes with a huge disadvantage, ie 100+bhp transmission losses:D

Wont argue any further on this 1, evos are good at what they do. So what? Why on a seat forum arguing about it?

You fail to realise that an Evo, Skyline or Impreza even in standard trim and driven sensibly will still take a bite out of the usable components. Add a few mods into the equasion and these components have even more trouble keeping their functions in tact, hence an upgrade. These add cost and in turn increase running costs as they typically run the same amount of mileage. Jap cars are a cash cow yet knowing that the car you are driving can literally out accelerate a typical super car is something else.
