Difference between a GTi and Cupra

Right, a friend of mine has just bought a 2litre 16 valve Ibiza GTi, and i cant really see much of a difference between that one and my cupra 16 valve. Ok the GTi has cloth trim, a sunroof and ac. Oh and the insurance is more expensive but are there any other differences? What was the reason in having both models when their very similar?

My reckoning is the Cupra was a kind of stripped out version of the Gti.

And as me and Rei discussed before possibly aimed at the rally/trackday enthusiast.

Pretty much spot on.

Owned a Cupra now have a GTI, the differences are pretty much only the ones mentioned below (Air con, Sunroof etc) plus a few little detailing differences like the Cupra has Red brake calipers, Seat Belts & White multispokes as Std.

to be honest though, spec trim options etc seem to vary from car to car, remeber it may be VAG engineering but it was put together by Pedro & his friends who love a siesta!

First bit is right, but you've got the insurance bit the wrong way round for the 8v. Bizarely the 8v Cupra,despite having less options, is higher insurance than the equivalent 8v GTi:
8v GTi group 10; 8v Cupra group 11.
16v GTI group 14; 16v Cupra group 14.

actually my gti was more expensive to ensure, i declared it as a cupra then realised it was a gti but with cuprasport stickers so changed it to a gti and it cost me £40 extra!!

Not going to make an opinion on this one, the Cupra felt a bit more special but the GTI has Air Con (mine even has Recaro's )

Both have exclusivity & Pedigree

No 8v's had air con IIRC
