Im afriad to say that the 1.2 12V unit in the Ibiza MK4 when driven correctly should be overall quicker than the 1.4 unit in the MK3.

Just think, you drive your 1.4 day in day out, whilst you dont know whats best for what in the 1.2.

Your 1.4 does 0-60 in 12 seconds? Tom and jerry timer?

Due to the 1.2 unit in the Ibiza being a 12v I personally feel when giving it some beans it sounds alot more 'sporty' than a 'bog standard 1.4 mk3'

IMO

Almost - I used the countdown timer on my mobile. Set it to twelve seconds, start it off, then drop the clutch and I always get to 60 on the beeper! Well unless I **** up a gear change or something ... Agreed though - I couldn't exactly do this with the salesman sat next to me! rofl. I'll throw him out the window next time [save some weight too!]

Good points though.

very toquey the 130 tdi fr styling by far the best deal imo with your requirements teknow

Hmmm .. me and the missus got into a few financial problems a few years back and with a daughter on the scene I don't EVER want to go there again. I can comfortably afford 8k and won't part with a penny more. Also - the warranty is important to me as I do loads of miles. I suspect I will keep the car to 100k miles or thereabouts which will take me 4 years. So petrol v diesel I don't actually save much in fuel costs over 100k.

I do like that engine though - it is the one in the Fabia VRS isn't it?!?!? Very tuneable!

Petrol v Diesel

Nope. I worked it out a few weeks ago.

Over 100,000 miles you only save about 700 in fuel costs with the Diesel. When you add on the extra you have to pay for the car in the first place [assuming buying new at RRP] then the Diesel doesn't work out cheaper.

If you take the Corsa, for example, which is only 300 more for the Diesel then yes you would save over 100,000 miles.

Dunno about servicing - but I worked on the basis that they are probably about the same to service.

Hang on - you reckon you won't save enough in fuel over 100k miles with a TDI ??

How on earth have you worked that out, what engines did you compare ?

EDIT: I guess you might not be far off after all but I still reckon you'd save £2000 or more in fuel.
However - also factor in that the TDI would have a lot more grunt than a suitably economical petrol !

yeah but the extra enjoyment you could have out of the 130 diesel is a hell of alot more than the 2nd gear ragging up a hill fun in a 1.2

Ok ive been doing a bit of research. I think you will save quite a bit buying a diesel.

Since your only looking at the 1.2 or 1.4 petrol thats what ive looked at.

So Ive tried to compare these two cars:

1.4 petrol stylance

2007-56 reg

4,000 miles

Average MPG: 43 (so about 100 miles to £10)

£7,495

1.4TDi Reference

2007-07 reg

6,000 miles

Average MPG: 61

£7,995

So you will be getting about 18MPG more, depending on how you drive it, it will also be in a lower tax bracket.

It will be worth more when you come to sell, diesels always hold their value better, especially companred to a high mileage petrol or diesel.

So it would only cost you an extra £500 to buy the diesel, although it is a lower spec but im sure you could find a better one for the same price, that was just two example i picked from the used seat site.

You will soon recover the £500 through fuel and tax, there is the option of getting it remapped too, which would give more MPG if driven nicely, and obviously loads more power.

If you only did small miles then i would say buy the petrol, but since you do lots of miles you will save a fortune.

I have a 1.0S Arosa, which does about 45 MPG. I also have a 1.4TDi Arosa which does about 58MPG, both averages. When i get back into my 1.0S i carnt believe how much fuel it uses compared to my TDi.

So im sure you will be quids in buying a diesel.

I'd choose the diesel simly for that reason even if they worked out the same total cost to own over a set period.

Given that the diesel works out at £700 cheaper in your own calculations I'd say you've got a winner. £700 saved is £700 for saved (or enough for a remap and to cover the insurance ;)).

Also, I assume you've taken depreciation into account? A diesel should depreciate less than a 1.2 petrol (diesel is the more desireable car in the used market).

Actually, I've just recalculated it and it is almost break even with the diesel being £200 cheaper over 4 years / 100,000 miles! It just depends if you want higher finance payments I guess. With the diesel you are paying for the fuel up front - with the petrol you keep more cash in your bank account.

Here is how I [roughly] work it:

1.2 Reference Sport = £8595 OTR
1.4 Reference Sport Tdi = £10,395 OTR

Petrol : 100,000 (160,934km) x 0.955 litre (@ 5.9 litres per 100km) = £9067
Diesel: 100,000 (160,934km) x 0.975 litre (@ 4.6 litres per 100km) = £7217

* Petrol prices are todays average price on www.petrolprices.com

I used parkers to get the p/x price of the car 4 years old - same model - but could only get the value with 30,000 miles on the clock as you have to pay extra to adjust the mileage.

It isn't exactly scientific but is the best I can do!

Id spen the extra 200 quid over 4 years simply to have a all round better car imho. Im sure the 1.4 Diesel will cost less on road tax, so should be even less than that tbh. Nevermind the fact I high milage diesel will sell better so a better chance of getting your asking price.

Or you could wait till 2008 and get a Seat Ibiza Ecomotive = TAX FREE and 67mpg :)

I think you need to re-think this

With the DERV you will always get good MPG no matter how much grief you give the engine. My TDI Cupra has never got under 35MPG as an average on even my most nutter journeys.

When I drive it normally it averages easily above 50mpg.

If I granny it I have managed 62.2mpg. Do that in a petrol with this much BHP & torque

Now If your having a tight month you can granny about, if your feeling flush you can give it large.

have to say they are both good cars, but if I could insure a 130 there is no competition I would have the 130, better mpg, less depreciation, easier to mod and just its faster!. But I cant insure one so Ill stick with the 1.2, as far as 1.2's go I would say the ibiza is right up there dont know many that match it on quality.

Yes the diesel may depreciate less but because the cars value is so low in the first place it should be of hardly much concern.

Take a 1.4 petrol over the 1.4 TDI anyday. The TDI costs more and is slower. Unless you do shitloads of miles it really is not worth it.

hello, i hear that ya wanted a nippy car and some people are suggesting that the 1.4 100bhp formula sport is a good idea!!! i defo thinks so, cause ive jus bought 1 and ive now just put a powerflow full de cat system on. so it is not only is nippy, but it makes the best sound aswell! i hope this helps:)
