Take a 1.4 petrol over the 1.4 TDI anyday. The TDI costs more and is slower.
It might be slower on headline 0-60 figures, but what about normal driving ?
I would suspect the TDI is much more torquey, giving much better pull where you need it in day to day driving, than a small revvy petrol engine.
Plus it'll remap nicely (whereas a non-turbo petrol won't), which could improve economy, and give plenty more performance than the 1.4 petrol when needed...

It's the 1.2 petrol vs the 1.4 TDI that teknow is considering, and I guarantee the diesel will be quicker in everyday driving, and not much in it in the traffic light drag race (but who cares about that anyway).

I agree with Muddyboots - everyday driving you want a diesel. Just as a comparison - and I'm being genuinely honest here - my Cupra TDI 160 is quicker in most situations than my previous car, a Civic Type R (197bhp). Despite a diesel being down on power, it can still be quicker than a more powerful petrol in most driving situations. Power makes a difference, but it's torque that matters ;)

Actually, I've just recalculated it and it is almost break even with the diesel being £200 cheaper over 4 years / 100,000 miles! It just depends if you want higher finance payments I guess. With the diesel you are paying for the fuel up front - with the petrol you keep more cash in your bank account.

Here is how I [roughly] work it:

1.2 Reference Sport = £8595 OTR
1.4 Reference Sport Tdi = £10,395 OTR

Petrol : 100,000 (160,934km) x 0.955 litre (@ 5.9 litres per 100km) = £9067
Diesel: 100,000 (160,934km) x 0.975 litre (@ 4.6 litres per 100km) = £7217

* Petrol prices are todays average price on www.petrolprices.com

I used parkers to get the p/x price of the car 4 years old - same model - but could only get the value with 30,000 miles on the clock as you have to pay extra to adjust the mileage.

It isn't exactly scientific but is the best I can do!

Excellent calculations :). Glad you’re being rational about this, sensible. I did something similar when I was deciding if it was worth getting rid of my CTR - I compared the same things but also included servicing costs, cost of replacement tyres, and insurance costs.

My personal thoughts are that you really should get the diesel. In the end even if it only saves you £200 over 4 years, you’re going to have 4 years of driving a car that’s quicker in most circumstances. It’s still a £200 saving – that’s a couple of great nights out…

Also, high mileage affects a petrol car’s resale value worse than a diesel (don’t believe everything you read in Parkers – if you want a more accurate guide of prices check out the “Owners section” on the Vauxhall website: it’s linked to a free version of Glasses’ Guide which usually costs about a fiver to get values).

I've just bought a 57 plated 1.4 Formula sport from Alexandra Bridge Cars in Sunderland with 100bhp and it s fantastic. They're doing them for just over £7700 in yellow and emecion red and just over £8k in magic black or silver.
Great motor wouldn't change it for the world.

Does the 1.4 actually remap well? I wouldnt think the gains would be worth it IMO. And keep the petrol at 3,000rpm and it will fly. (for a 1.4 that is)

Yeah but thats because my wheel nuts require more torque when tightning than a v-tech motor produces :p

I remeber when I was racing my mate in his 1.8TDCI focus and he didnt pull away from till we hit 90mph. Everytime it looked as if the diesel motor would pull away from me he had to change gear and we would be pretty much level again lol.

Buy a demo, or pre reg Ibiza ref sport 1.4 TDi for around £9K, i know somone who has just done that, and you will be laughing :)

Better all round spec and the 1.2 engine will be a bit buzzy at motorway speeds where as the tdi will be more relaxed.

Id say get the TDi, i carnt even think why anyone who does lots of miles would still want a petrol car nowadays, when diesels are so good!

Good luck with you new car though :)

Let us know what you buy in the end.

Using info from Custom Code as an example:

1.4 TDI

Standard:
75bhp
145lbft

Phase 1 (Generic remap):
105-110bhp
175-185lbft

...to me a 40-46% increase in power and a 20-28% increase in torque is definitely worthwhile !

Anything with a turbo is going to give easy gains for little outlay.

The 1.4 TDI as standard has more torque than the 1.4 16v petrol would have even with a CC Phase 2 custom remap....
