Expensive time of year for me with wifes car (1.9TDI) due 8yr service, brake fluid change, cambelt, possible brake pads front and rear and mot!

Few questions - the cambelt was changed when last due in 2008 and the newer water pump was fitted. do i still need to change the wp now again?

Also still on original pads front and rear car only done 56k. The pads still had around 6k on them at last service but was told today when getting quotes that perhaps the discs may need changing also as they tend to corrode with age. Not checked them yet, but is it reasonable to expect the discs to last longer?
Also when pads are getting low is there not a warning light on the dash?

My wife does not drive this car hard at all! I do maybe once a year when taking it for service!

As this is looking like a huge bill, what should be a reasonable cost for:
replacing discs and pads all round
cambelt plus wp if needed
brake fluid change
full service
any recommendations for garages in Kent / dartford area
will it be less expensive to supply oem parts myself and get them fitted during service?

thanks

Running a car is expensive for sure, not least when it all bunches up into one service. A major service like you're talking about is a safety check also...there might be other stuff that needs doing that you're not aware of.

Changing the water pump at the same time as your cam belt would be a standard thing to do. It's a no brainer to get it done at the same time I think as they aren't that expensive.

Re the brake discs and pads I did mine myself...it's pretty easy to do and there's loads of online guides on how to do it. If you need to change your front discs for OEM quality they'd be around £40 each, rears about £20-30 each, with £30-£40 for OEM quality front pads. Changing brake pads at the same time as your discs is good practice. If the rear discs are okay I doubt you will need to replace the rear pads(£20), but if you do you will need a wind back tool (right hand thread I think) for the rear callipers, but you can get one for £10 - £15.

A brake fluid change shouldn't be mega expensive- main dealers charge about £40 so an independent mechanic should defo be cheaper.

If you got a Seat main dealer to do everything I reckon about £800-900+ perhaps more. The main dealer would love you to take the car to them with the list of things that 'may' need doing. A trusted independent mechanic would charge maybe about half that amount. I wonder what other people think of my estimates :)

taking a look and seeing what you think id certainly recommend.
However these disks are 8 years old..!?

If there is 6k miles left on pads and the disks are only starting to show signs then there is no rush to get this done for the MOT?

Main Seat dealer prices are going to be very high for all that work.

Cambelt + water pump £450 ish
Major service £350 ish
Brake fluid £80-90 ish
Discs and pads all round (a wild guess) £300

So I recon quite a bill. You should be able to all most half that at a independent. ;)

I would get the disc's inspected before saying yes. Normally you would get an advisory on the mot ?

All the correct current prices are in RED above and here is the link to where the info is: http://www.seat.co.uk/content/uk/brand/en/special-offers/service/it-s-fixed.html

Thanks. My local seat dealer is not on list so looks like I'll be taking a 70mile round trip to tmc in Canterbury where they want 299 for cam belt with water pump, 180 ish for service, Brake fluid 30 quid and 99 for front pads. Happy to fit parts if I supplied myself too

Will likely book in at end of march

well managed to get drivers side front and rear wheels off, and think I need new pads at front but not sure about discs. Looking at the pics can anyone advise if discs are needed?
Pad thickness at front is around 5mm and rear 8mm:

As you can see the discs have some corrosion around the edges but otherwise seem ok.

Also has anyone used Planet Car parts on ebay for parts as they have a full set of discs and pads front and rear for £75 compared to £125 from other sources

I may have a go at front pads myself...............

thanks

for brakes you wont go wrong with EBC available from camskill (saves a few ££) Ive just ordered front pads & discs (fr tdi) for £79.

the rear discs look rough, the front discs look ok but hard to tell really by photo

some1s looking after your car judging by the copper grease

Thanks I'll have a look at cam skill and consider changing the rear discs and pads.
Where is the copper grease.? Last time the wheels were off was 2yrs ago when it was serviced at TMC canterbury when they cleaned the brakes as part of the full service.
Thanks

Thanks, could be copper grease as I don't remember it being rusty.
Think I may get pagid discs and pads as europarts have 25% of brakes ATM.
Can get discs all round and pads for less than £110

Are these any good as according to the blurb on the website they are used by VAG?
Thanks

sounds good to me

id always advise buying brake parts from a reputable business, i have read of fake/copies being sold cheap on ebay with potential for disaster

If you've got a micrometer, measure the thickness of the old discs - there'll be a minimum recommended thickness (verniers won't do as discs often wear with a lip round the edge) if you're near or at that, change the discs. As for brake parts, GSF do OE replacement Brembo discs; you'll not go far wrong with them and they're not expensive either.

Actually a set of verniers, or digital callipers will work okay if you also use a pair of repair washers that are at least as thick as the wear lip! Just open the callipers and close them with the washers in them, then zero them.

Well, this is what any OEM parts supplier will say, what is true, is that VAG do fit Pagid pads to the front brakes at the factory and tend to fit Textar (another brand from the same group as Pagid), to the rear brakes at the factory as far as I know, VAG do not fit Pagid discs at the factory, but I'd reckon that that group of companies buys in discs and repackages them and sells them into the aftermarket only - though I'd trust that they would use buy them in from a "good" brake manufacturer. This is no different to Sachs who supply shock absorbers to VAG - but also sell coil springs to the aftermarket - goodness knows who makes their coil springs as coil springs do not show up on their website.

There are no lips on either discs so I'll assume they are ok. also, as the front pads only have 5mm left i think I'll change them. but leave the rears as they have 8mm.
