Ok, so have been on the hunt for a new MK2 Ibiza for a while now and came accross a 1999 MK2 8v GTi. However some things worry me.

1. Its 7years old and only done 33,000miles
2. It has NO service history - No books whatsoever
3. Its had 8 owners
4. The current owner only has the V5

Alarm bells are ringing in my head, but its also a nice car and i can get hold of it for a rock bottom price, much less than book. It is HPI clear.

Any ideas guys?

Cheers

Have you done an HPI check yourself and checked the chasis number personally? Does sound a bit dodge to me.

bit dodgy if you ask me, 8 owners and only 33,000, how come changed hands so much??, no service history.......

I would not bother with it , service history in my eyes is a must

I havent done the HPI check personally, however they have encouraged me to do another and show me their certificate. Any way to check if the milage is genuine? Do MOT test centres or DVLA take the milage when its taxed?

mileage CAN be seen on MOT certificates, there is an option of entering the mileage when getting tax but this is not required by law so most people never fill it in..... there must be receipts or something to check it with though

MOT stations usually DO take the mileage, but my Mk2 for instance is reading at @ 96K but in truth its only done 85K. i changed the clocks for digital cupra ones.... so . even that can be misleading:)

Yup the dials being changed had passed through my mind. Unfortunatley there are no old MOT certs on the car The only recent one was done september last year, i forgot to ask the mileage on that when i rang up though

I think i am going to have to go see it and drive it. There should be a few signs as to its true mileage such as rust around arches, wear on drivers seat bolster, steering wheel and gear shift wear and tear etc.

I know how my old one drove at 45k so i can do a rough comparison there. At least i get to drive one again.

to much risk to be honest i'd say walk away if it seems to good to be true then usuall is, plus does the guy seem genuine or a bit on the dodgy side, plus is it worth the risk??

It s a part-ex centre that its at so are any of them ever 100%? The guy seems alright and has given me a good trade in on the phone for my car. That or he is eager to get rid of the GTi.......................

Cheers for the help guys, i really appreciate it. Think i will let this one slip past. Its always been a thing of mine not to touch a car without service history and 8 owners does suggest it may have had more than a few problems. The search goes on......

have you tried checking the car out with a seat dealer, they keep details for all cars that have been serviced, could be that the history has been lost or disposed of to conceal its history. I checked out my leon this way even though it has fsh on 147400 miles, Xreg. Only 2 owners though.
8 owners in 7 years, sounds dodgy as hell to me!!!!!

can't you get the last owners details off the V5? you could give them a ring and ask why they got rid of it

a lot of previous owners on a low mileage car usually shows the cars a dog - more time in the garage than on the road - there are exeptions though (i only do around 5k a year)

I worked it out actually if each owner did the same milage they did just over 4k a year, i put that on my old GTi in 6months.
