The ecu is running safe parameters as theres no signal from the maf. Its over fuelling so will eventually knacker the cat.

It wouldnt run it like that for long

I only unplugged it cause the car smells like its running so rich.
It actually idled better with it unplugged but when I drove up the road it stank of petrol really bad.
Plugged it back in and it started coughing and spluttering real bad eventually sorted itself out a bit but idle is a bit up and down .
Also when it was unplugged the car didn't hesitate and hold back for the split second like it does sometimes around about 2000 rpm. Does anyone think I need a new maf

its ok to drive with the Maf unplugged if you dont boot it and dont do it long term.
It will run a little rich basically IIRC, as said with slightly safer settings using assumed values.

To run it unplugged to try and diagnose potential maf issues its not problem; again there is no need to trash the car so dont do it. But routinely/long term. no, get the maf sorted - which at the cost of around a tank full of fuel (for a decent one) there is no excuse.

If it runs better unplugged it dose point towards maf issues which usually a new maf sorts out, rarely it could be the maf wiring. even rarer still is the wrong maf being on the car or someone fitting a larger maf and not understanding the consequences...
