car cut out and wont start vag com shows no ecu found. an after market ecu simply replaces the standard one but doing this you can then map the car yourself using a lap top and also it gets rid of some of the little niggles like you can junk the proplematic maf sensor and also then get big power if you want

very interested in the aftermarket ecu idea, but never heard of one!! what the situation with matching the dials/immobiliser up aswell then?

If you replace with an after market one you could get more issues than you think
I would double check first
The only one I heard of was a problem with the dash pod
Replacing the ECU will not get rid of a problem like that
If you disconnect the MAF you will not have any air flow readings , so how will fueling be adjusted

It is possible to change the ECU to an aftermarket version and remove the MAF.
Fuelling is set within the ECU, so the MAF can be removed.
We have worked on some of these when fitting the 1.8T to MK2 Golfs, and kit cars.

My main concern though is that someone else is going to be told their ECU is knack`d and replace it still to have the problem there
I would not go for a stand alone one until you know for sure it is duff
I must admit though p-torque when you do another one if it is on a modern car I would like to know

mostly aftermarket ecu's are used on higher power cars so that they can be mapped exactly to the users needs there are loads of different ones out on the market but they are all quite expensive
there is both permanant 12v and switched 12v at the ecu. it has had a superchip fitted but this was done over 2 years ago

They are commonly used on high powered Turbo Japenese models, which dont use a MAF.
We have a demo MK1 Jetta fitted with a 1.8T, and thats running an aftermarket ECU.
I agree with you though, ECU's are very unlikley to fail unless they have been subjected to water.
I would ensure that the ECU has been sealed correctly, and that the soldering has been done well.
