mid 16's is good for 115bhp...

was it down hill (joke)

tune it up, or sell the car on as an engine swap will leave you feeling skint both for the labour & the insurance.

the 8v is good on the twisties (as ken with justify) but crap in a straight line, always will be.

You can have a shed load of fun in the 8v and can give alot of more powerful cars a good run for their money (as proven at Donnington yesterday) if you want to destroy them though you really do need something more.

Best weigh up the price of doing each mod, for instance 1k+ (easily) to do head, cam, remap an an 8v. Compare each, and decide how quickly you're going to get bored of the car!

I'm in a similar situation, but can't decide what to do at the mo. I've got the handling and braking pretty much sorted but am undecided on whether to fork out x amount of money on tuning the engine. Having said that I know I'll get bored of whatever I have and will always want more, that's just the way it goes!

well, av been offered the 210bhp engine out the leon cupra R for £950 which i think is a ****ing bargain! thats the engine geatbox and ecu loom

and have been quoted £500 to have teh conversion done. so thats £1450 to double my power plus i might get a little selling my current engine.

a love the 8 valver but its shite in str8 lines

already got ma suspenion and breaks sorted... will admit tho, ma 17" super legaras have hindered ma acceleration a lil :(

If you can get it done for 1500quid then go for it, be prepared to have to fork out more though. 500quid to have the conversion done sounds rather cheap. Allow for x2 expected off the road time!

Good luck!

Sub £1500 fitted sounds a little TOO cheap IMHO. Consider also that insurance costs will go through the roof (they always do when you start swapping engines about).

As a veteran of a few engine swaps that were actually fitted as OE kit to the cars they were going into - and we're talking old stuff here without any of that new fangled electrickery and ECU's coming into the equation - these things usually end up being far more complex than first anticipated.

BTW - how old is your 8v? Depending on age, it may have either a 2E or an AGG engine. If you decide to tune what you've got, the engine code will be a factor in which direction to go in. Depending upon how far you want to go, it may also be worth considering going to a crossflow head as used in new Beetle 2.0 (mk4 Golf 2.0 also?) - sorry, don't have engine codes to hand. This would put the inlet towards the front of the engine bay, making sidedraft carbs or throttle bodies an option more worthwhile considering.

Engine Upgrade

Hi All,

I purchased a 1995 Seat Ibiza with a 1.4l carb engine and manual transmission.

My question is what other standard engine can this one be replaced by.? 1.8, 2.0 engine as I just want it to go a little bit better.

Would a larger than 1.4l Toledo, Cordoba, Polo or Golf engine fit in the engine bay and fit up to the engine subframe. Would I need a matching gearbox or are the holes the same as the Seat?

We do not at this stage get the Cupra here in Australia that I know of.

Thanks in advance.

Yes we do get the 1.8t here but as soon a turbo is mentioned the insurance goes through the roof.

I was hoping for a larger naturally aspirated engine that would fit into the Ibiza as it is for my daughter.

Im in Oz and have done a couple of engine swops in Seats.
Use the search function on this site, as I documented putting a 1.8 Golf GTI engine and gearbox into a 1.4 Ibiza.
I also put a VR6 into a Beeza :)
