Alright Folks, Theres a few threads lately about engine swaps, mods etc, I was reading the latest copy of Max Power yesterday and theres new laws concerning the swapping of engines, I cant remember the exact jist of it but basically if you change an engine on your own you must change your V5, however before they will do this you must get your work signed off by a garage to make sure its all done proper like, and they were saying the only way they will sign it off is..... yep you guessed it, take it in to the garage and they have to dismantle it and reassemble it.... you can imagine the bill. Its worth checking this out if your considering any tinkering. The fun police strike again.

Sounds like typical Lax Power misreporting

With every engine change you should always update your V5. Always have done too.

Updating your V5 has never, and will never require an engineers report.

they can request (rarely do) an SVA inspection though, especially on body changes, morris minor convertible is one that comes to mind.

there is something stirring though as a few hot rodders have been talking about retrospective emissions and cat converters/airbags etc

think it was germany starting it off last year

and if it did come into circulation, i think the cars done before it is put into action will be fine anyway!

hmmm. I just found the fatal flaw in the system

If I change my engine, I have to tell DVLA, who make me pay a garage to check it £££

OR

I don't tell DVLA. End of story.

I wonder which option would happen

Had a Scirocco GT (1600) in the early 90's, put a 130bhp TSR engine in it along with bigger brakes etc. Did everything I should to keep it legal, informed the DVLA etc. When it came time to insure it the Insurance company insisted an engineer/garage should do a report on it prior to commencement of the policy. It did make me wonder whether it was worth the hassle, but what would the outcome be if a claim was made!

for a maximum of 12 month's if the german system is anything to go by, come next mot is when it will be checked and reported

exactly but from rumours spreading it's going to be down to the MOT station to report that the vehicle has not had extensive modifications etc etc, grey area at present as usual

I forsee a country full of drugged up carefree unlicensed uninsured drivers bombing around in modded cars as it's cheaper to get caught (no prison space) than top be legal

leaving a lot of perfect legit innocent hard working and extortinately paying car owners screwed as usual and losing out when one of the above wrecks their car
