rite hear it is, i own a seat ibiza N reg 1.8 GTI 16v, got offerd a 2ltr 16v out of an R reg seat ibiza, thought it was just gunna be a straight swop, ummm NO, me and a m8 took the 1.8 lump out of my car and looked at the wiring and found the 2ltr engine 2 have more sensors so we though we'll just change it what a night mer!!! took all wiring out and put new wiring in 2 fuse box, then straped it 2 engine bay were old wiring was. looked at the 2ltr gearbox and the linkage was differant so we used my 1.8 gearbox, anyways got it all in back on deck and theres no spark  got told that the 2ltr ecu will be locked 2 a key and my 1.8 one will not work??? is this true??? please help its doing my head in. checked all earths and 2 differant coils could it be a re-lay or fuse as its differant wiring now??? i am lost.

cheers any help is good ;)

I think this is effectively the same conversion as putting the 2L ABF engine into a mk2 16V golf - which I've done a couple of times.
Assuming it is then you have different injection systems. As well as the ECU coding problem. The easiest solution is just to swap the block and head over and nothing else. That way you retain the older style (KR engine) K-jet injection and wiring etc. Also retain the rod-change gearbox meaning you have no problems with the shifting.
The alternative of upgrading to the cable change box and digi-injection is a much more complicated conversion and I couldn't really see it being worth the effort myself.

is the ibiza 1.816v(ADL) on k-jet?thought it was also on digifant? rob T will tel us for certain.
ABF runs a crank sensor,ADL doesn't,not sure if that will hinder you even more.
be prepared (maybe) for any clearance problems too,the ABF is taller then the ADL,so think of manifold etc

Bag of worms mate - the 1.8 16V ADL is an odd engine, its got an ECU like an ABF but with limited functionality, it is a form of digifant - not a straight swap at all and the adl is certainly not kjet like a Mk2 16V golf. The adl has a map sensor in the ecu to sense load (inlet manifold pressure), a throttle pot to sense throttle angle and a distributor to sense engine position. Rev signal comes off the coil. It does not have a crank (engine position sensor) sensor like a abf engine. The alarm is not part of the ecu on an adl (this is under the dash on the far passenger side) but the immobilisor may be...dunno

You should be able to swap the head and block over ok though - some differences may be encountered:

1. leave the adl gearbox well alone, no need to change unless you want to or are seriously uprating the abf - rod shift is nice anyhow - will mate to abf no problem (can tell you how to do this if you ever want to put a cable shift box in there) - use adl clutch/flywheel on end of abf crank

2. you will need to fit the adl distributor to the abf head - tsr do a spacer for this

3. the abf engine is 17mm taller than an adl - bonnet clearance should not be an issue (as later Mk2 ibiza's had abf's fitted and had same subframe and mounts) but making the exhaust mate up will be - spacer needed for the downpipe flange - also available from tsr

TSR do a kit of parts for the many people who have fitted abf's into Mk2 golfs - you have most of the same issues but you will end up with digifant control rather than kjet

Any problems just shout

Cheers

Rob

Okay so it's a bit different to the mk2 golf by the sound of it.
I didn't have any issues with clearance or mating up anything when I fitted the ABF into my mk2 golf. I used the ABF head, block and exhaust manifold - everything else from the original car including, as you say, the distributor (very important!).

sounds alot of work!!! but hey its started now. rite we used the 1.8 gearbox clutch and fly wheel(rod). so now i need the spacer for the dizzy, and put my 1.8 dizzy on the 2ltr engine??? what ecu do i use??? and will this need unlocking 2 my key??? when we had dash bord out, we dident say a lil boxs for an imoboliser, ummm? will i need more fuses and re-lays in myh fuse box???

cheers for the help ppl!! Graham

if any 1 lives any were near redcar(north east) who fancys earning a bit of cash!!!they can do my car!!!

if you had read above u would have seen it! not hard 2 miss like. think i might just change the full plan! run it on twin 40's then i wont need an ecu! cheers any help is good

The ECU does a lot more than just put fuel in the engine ;)

How are you going to give the engine spark ?

Rob

rite i have left the car till the new year and its here now!! from what i can see use have written do i use my 1.8 wiring for the 2ltr or using the 2ltr as i have already put this all in??? cheers Graham

well hello ppl, finaly got the 2ltr in on the 1.8 gearbox and its running got the ecu recoded and it started!!!:D had afew problems with lights and **** but got that sorted and exhausst is done. few problems we cant work out 1)cant get 5th gear(we are using the 1.8 clutch and fly wheel is this a problem??) 2)and i have alot of play on the clutch, on the peddle i have about say 3inchs of clutch:(

cheers for the help guys, Graham

No 5th is probably the linkage rods going to the gearbox. Get someone to sit in the car and go through the gears, you lean into the enginebay and see how the rods move. You should be able to pull it into 5th manually. If so, one of the rods needs bending a bit, or straightening to become longer, or one of the rubber bushes is knackered and there is too much play. Shouldn`t be a big job.

Good work on getting it running

curious how you got on with differing size clutches mate 1.8 box has a smaller clutch then the 2ltr 16v,how you get one with mating to the flywheel etc?

If he used the 1.8 020 gearbox & clutch he would have had to have taken the flywheel off the 1.8 engine

or vice versa
