it will die off at 130 ish, that will be gearing on the 1.8 box(which is cack by all accounts)mk2 golf gti box instead will give it better gearing, and as you can pick em up for peanuts
16v box mate, drop robT a pm,he showed me the differing ratio's years back when i had a 180016v,he may still have the info for you.
1.816v ibiza gearbox ratio's are not very close at all
If you can bring yourself to look at a Scirocco site, there's some useful info on various 020 ratios at www.scirocco.org - use the "gears" link at the bottom of the front page (funny, that...) There's also a semi-handy excel spreadsheet thing you can download to compare a number of sets of ratios in sligtly less abstract terms. However, being US oriented, it doesn't list all the different variations available in Europe - and believe me, if you've ever gone looking in Etka, there's a lot of variations...
You dont need to change your clutch and the selectors are the same. Just chuck in a Mk2 Golf 16v box and grin all the way. Even the mounts are the same.
Mate had a Mk1 golf gti with a Mk2 1.8 16v lump in with a Mk2 8v box..........that went like the clappers.
Every gear was just rite.....next one would just fire it up the road faster and faster..pity it blew up....mind u he drive like he had 'full works' back up in the garage...TIT!!!!
Try getting along to your local Club GTI meet - it used to be in a pub between Nunthorpe and Guisborough. Or perhaps if Ron Turnbulls and/or Volkswerk in Middlesbrough are still about, they might be able to help?
Just had a look at www.clubgti.com and it looks like the Cleveland section meet has moved - it's at the Haynes Arms on the A19 North, 3 miles South of the Stokesley turning these days. And it's on the 2nd Monday of the month at 7.30 p.m. Someone there should be able to point you in the direction a 'box or a breakers that might be worth a sniff if Turnbull's or Volkswerk can't help you out.
