I'm having to fit a new oil sump as the first one got a f*ckin hole in it just after I got it back from being fixed!!

How difficult is it to fit an oil sump?? I don't think I've got the confidence to try!

Dave

not too hard, although i dont know how the pump picks up the oil from the sump as ive never seen one.

you'd need a good set of tools, new gasket and patience, if any doubt, find a garage

I dont think it is that hard. Jus undo the nuts and it should come right off. Dont forget to drain the oil. Think you might need a new gasket and the new on should just go staight on. As for the oil pump it just picks up oil from the pump so no need to worry bout it!

I'd suggest you have a good look 1st.

Did the wife's Ka and despite having good tools/facilities/experience it was an absolute **** of a job :censored:

Had to take off both exhaust and manifold (5hit design) and the gasket is obviously fitted by the factory with the engine inverted, 'cos it's almost impossible to fit the other way.

Leon will of course be different, but you get the idea.....

I did the oil sump on my current car (vauxhall) and yes it can be a :censored: to do.

Basically, check to see if the exhaust will be in the way. That was the biggest problem for me as the screw snapped off in the manifold/engine joint and i had to redrill a new hole! V messy, but sorted in the end.

Prob a few hours/afternoon work
good luck!

There not to bad to do nothing is in the way, got a non gen sump from a factors for £60. similar to the 1.9TDi Ford Galaxy all VAG

Brought a brand new sump for my 1.9tdi doing it tomorrow cost me 27.30. And I had to buy some sealant for it because they don't have a seal

It's doesn't come with a seal u have to get proper sump sealant. Use a thin rim around it

There is no sump gasket, you have to use a proper silicone sealant - not shower seal :) .

Clean off all the old sealant, making sure none of it is left inside the engine or sump. Apply a single bead of sealant 2-3mm in diameter along the middle of the sump mating face, looping round the inside of each bolt hole.

Do not apply too big a bead of sealant. One of the major causes of blocked filter strainers, oil starvation and bearing failure, is reported to be excess sealant that has squeezed out into the sump side of the joint, beaded, hardened over time (being cooked by hot engine oil), dropped off into the sump and been dragged into the strainer mesh, blocking it.

did mine about a month ago, not too hard just make sure you clean everything right up, oh and there are 3 bolts at the gearbox end that are deep up inside but also at a slight angle to the hole you have to get them out through, these are a pain, i used a long ball end 5 mm allen key at the sump bolts are 10mm hex external and 5mm hex internal, which is handy

also worth taking off the oil pump pickup and cleaning the strainer

Cost me about 185 quid to have mine replaced at garage including new oil filter etc. bought sump myself for 45 quid though. If your car is lowered and your having dramas with hitting it then there is a shallow sump you can buy!

185? Wow did mine this morning took half an hour! Where can you get this shallow sump from?

Did mine recently. You'll need a 3/8th socket set (the ratchet head wants to be quite small for access to gearbox>sump bolts.
You'll need a decent extension and a 10mm socket (preferably a 6 sided, not 12)
You'll need an extension, preferably with a wobble on the end of it.
You must use sump sealant, GSF sell the VW approved stuff at reasonable prices.

Fit a new oil pump pickup pipe and o-ring. These are available from the dealers and make sure you haggle on the o-ring as they are £2.50+vat list! lol!

Sorry to resurrect a very old discussion but I was searching for a sump when this popped up.
Has the sealant thing changed? Only, the sump I was looking at can be sold with a seal. So I'm wondering if I'm looking at the wrong sump or if they are now making gaskets for them?
