hi guys, jjust looking for a bit of advice, last week i developed a thrapping noise and was diagnosed with cam/lifter problems so went and changed the cam and lifters, 2 of the lifters were really worn and 1 had worn all the way through, only thing is i seem to have deloped a problem, basically the car struggles to start, once its started its fine, runs smooth and still pulls good but getting it started is bad, ive run a scan and get

14963 p3007 camshaft position sensor-g40:no signal

is this something that i may have knocked or broken when i did the cam?

on another note i undid the three 13mm nuts on the camshaft pully before i was told by a mate that i shouldn't have undone them, could this cause any problems?

Thanks guys

anybody??

The cam sensor is located behind the cam pulley, you have possibly not got the connector on right or the wiring trapped/damaged.

Does it run OK? I f the engine timing was way out it could show a fault but I would imagine it would show as implausible?

You do have to undo those 3 x 13mm cam pulley bolts to get the engine timing right, if you did not you had better retension the belt. Proccedure as follows:

Set the engine timing by inserting the crank locking tool, insert the timing pin in the cam pulley if it will fit, undo the three bolts (now fit the timing pin if it was too tight before, you may have to move the cam slightly), both tools must fit easily without tightness, tension the timing belt, torque up the 3 bolts, remove both tools, turn engine twice, refit tools and check they insert easily, if not repeat the process.

This is the code I had when we did mine [I think] the cam timing was out on mine because we didn't have the correct crank locking tool and even tho we lined the marks up it was still ever so slightly out.......although the fact that it starts sometimes suggests the sensor could be faulty? There £80 for a genuine one.

cheers guys, it turns out that whilst i was removing/refitting thecam pulley i must have bent the timing marks on the back of it which after a while had been rubbing on the cam sensor and had worn a hole in it, i tried with a new sensor and jobs a good en'

thanks again

Sorry to bring up an old thread.

Just had a look at the posts on this thread.

I'm playing with the idea of changing my 1.8t leon cupra for a leon fr 150.

What are the synptoms of knackered cams and when do they start to go?

Well I knew about the cam thing with these engines before I bought it. But mine had full same dealer service history from new, and was the very last (Jan 2006 registered) of the MK1's and supposedly should of had the modded black lifters in. Apparently they started doing this in Nov 2005 so my engine prob just missed out on it. I'm a mechanic by trade so can tune in to noises that shouldn't be there.

Anyway, I noticed a very intermittent tappet noise not long after I bought it (57K miles). Not very loud and I didn't have any running issues so I left it. It didn't get any worse but I thought I would have a look when I was doing an oil change (79K miles).

Pulled the cover off and there were clear wear signs on 3 of the lifters and cam lobes. Knowing what it develops into I changed the cam kit for an AW Engineering kit and genuine cam cap & injector rocker bolts. Came to £420 for the parts. Replaced it all myself. Running and sounding lovely.

My mate who had a Golf with the same engine, he wasn't so lucky. The cam ate through a couple of lifters, jammed uo solid and totally ruined the cyl head. He had it all done but the car was never the same after with oil pressure probs, repeat cam failure and running problems so he cut his losses and got rid.

Thats probably the worst case scenario and it aint cheap.

Symptoms - noisy engine, poor starting, and generally lumpy/flat performance. Mine didn't have any of this but I knew it was a weak point on this engine.

HTH and sorry for my ramblings!
