i am 19 and i insure my FR tdi for £550, 1 claim which was (my fault) and 2 years no claim bonus.
Shop around because when i first got a quote they wanted in the region of £1500!!
There's a difference between being able to handle a car on a track and being a responsible driver on the road.......I got the fastest lap time at a recent company karting event (and some of the other drivers there have raced karts and cars in the past) but I am still aware that I have tons to learn when it comes to driving on the road.
I'm not trying to put a downer on your son getting a quicker car, but from what you describe above it doesn't sound like he's ready for it. Perhaps I'm just a boring old fart at the grand old age of 30?
You say he wants to get a quicker car once he's 21, but above you've written that he has been caught speeding in some roadworks (what if he had hit a workman?), rolled a car on a country road and had a lapse of concentration causing him to crash into the back of a car at a roundabout. What if that lapse of concentration had happened while doing 80 down the motorway and he failed to notice an incident ahead....?
It's your money at the end of the day, but I'd still look at doing some kind of deal where he proves he can drive for X amount of time without incident before getting an upgrade.
When I got my first FR I was 20 with 2 claims and paid £1400 for 10 month with Bell. Next renewal I was 21 had 3 claims and 3 points and the price was the same so I'd say he's looking at well over a grand. I'm looking at just under £1000 this year now that 2 of my claims won't count.
how much NCB would he save if he paid that off? Not really worth it for £1500 IMO
Remember that the FR is also worth a serious ammount more than the 1.2 he owns (im guessing) this will be a factor in the premium
I'm 40 (wow that old!) with a 2007 DAB Sport TDi (remapped to 150bhp) and my insurance is just over £200 a year, I've got over 9 years NCD. So I'd hate to think what the insurance for me would be on a Cupra or FR . . . .
I then got him a 51 reg Saxo VTR which he turned upside down avoiding an animal on a country lane (his fault)
LOL!!
Used that one myself, shame no one believed me. Didn't roll it by any means, but did a good job of turning my MKII Golf into a 3-wheeler.
So if anything since owning the car, my driving on public roads atleast is probs slower! Also im a sad git and see if I can beat my mpg of most journeys I do on a regular basis, so best to work is something like 53mpg! On the way back from the gf I nearly got the book figure of 55.4mpg but it dropped right at the end going up my hill to 55.2mpg![]()
Thats the same 10 month policy as his at the moment. Do bell not count claims 3 years and older? I think this September his first 2 claims will be 3 years old+
That will go his way but he's still got his recent claim losing what he's already built up.
