There's a difference between being able to handle a car on a track and being a responsible driver on the road.......I got the fastest lap time at a recent company karting event (and some of the other drivers there have raced karts and cars in the past) but I am still aware that I have tons to learn when it comes to driving on the road.

I'm not trying to put a downer on your son getting a quicker car, but from what you describe above it doesn't sound like he's ready for it. Perhaps I'm just a boring old fart at the grand old age of 30?
You say he wants to get a quicker car once he's 21, but above you've written that he has been caught speeding in some roadworks (what if he had hit a workman?), rolled a car on a country road and had a lapse of concentration causing him to crash into the back of a car at a roundabout. What if that lapse of concentration had happened while doing 80 down the motorway and he failed to notice an incident ahead....?

It's your money at the end of the day, but I'd still look at doing some kind of deal where he proves he can drive for X amount of time without incident before getting an upgrade.

I know what you're saying but I don't think having a car a little quicker is going to make the blindest bit of difference...agreed if it were 300+ bhp. He's learn't his lesson from his earlier mistakes but he's been careful for the past 2+ years and unfortunate with his latest blip, and too be honest those sort of incidents happen all the time at roundabouts when you think the person has gone in front of you when theres a clear gap in the roundabout.

He's my partner's son so easier to describe him as my step son, I didn't know him when he had his first car but have known him from 17 and a bit and have encouraged his enthusiasm in cars but hopefully taught him to drive safely as not exceed the speed limits in built up and dangerous areas. We all speed on some roads but you do it where theres little danger to yourself or anyone else, and I think he has adopted that attitude. He's not one of these that races around the streets.

I played around with some online quotes and the FR tdi is coming out at about £300 more than his 1.2. According to his current insurer, Bell, he could keep his NCB if he pays for the damage of the car he recently hit but thats £1500. In the long term that would probably work out better but its a lot for him to fork out now.

When I got my first FR I was 20 with 2 claims and paid £1400 for 10 month with Bell. Next renewal I was 21 had 3 claims and 3 points and the price was the same so I'd say he's looking at well over a grand. I'm looking at just under £1000 this year now that 2 of my claims won't count.

Thats the same 10 month policy as his at the moment. Do bell not count claims 3 years and older? I think this September his first 2 claims will be 3 years old+
That will go his way but he's still got his recent claim losing what he's already built up.

how much NCB would he save if he paid that off? Not really worth it for £1500 IMO

Remember that the FR is also worth a serious ammount more than the 1.2 he owns (im guessing) this will be a factor in the premium

I'm 40 (wow that old!) with a 2007 DAB Sport TDi (remapped to 150bhp) and my insurance is just over £200 a year, I've got over 9 years NCD :p. So I'd hate to think what the insurance for me would be on a Cupra or FR . . . .

Around July this year it would have been 3 years NCB and like you say its not going to be £1500 more expensive by losing his bonuses.

I'm guessing around £2k - £2.5k difference between the two cars which is the bit I'm looking at funding. Everything else he would have to pay for.

Its great being an old git isn't it? where insurance is concerned anyway.

My S4 (group 20) is only about £300 and my partner's MCS conv (group 16) is £142. Don't know wether I'd swap a few less wrinkles for more cost though:think:

I then got him a 51 reg Saxo VTR which he turned upside down avoiding an animal on a country lane (his fault)

LOL!!

Used that one myself, shame no one believed me. Didn't roll it by any means, but did a good job of turning my MKII Golf into a 3-wheeler.

Ive never had the pleasure of using that one before, a mate of mine did however! Dog ran out infront of him ;)

I have used a original one, which was I came onto a roundabout (in the dark) and there was temp. road sign face down on the road so didnt reflect off my lights, as I turned to go round the roundabout my wheel got STUCK inbetween where the sign gets held up and it slid me right into kurp :(

This was in my old 1.2 beeza. Alot like you no one believed me either! Funny thing was, how the hell could I think of that up! I even had the sign at the side of the car when the recovery van turned up :(

Back on subject, insurance will also depend on milage, and postcode! Im 21 and have owned a FR TDi since I was 18 with just 8 months driving under my belt. Ownership of a 'faster' car doesnt mean anything, you can kill someone in ANY car. However owner this car, means I dont feel the need to show off how fast it is next to all the chavs.

So if anything since owning the car, my driving on public roads atleast is probs slower! Also im a sad git and see if I can beat my mpg of most journeys I do on a regular basis, so best to work is something like 53mpg! On the way back from the gf I nearly got the book figure of 55.4mpg but it dropped right at the end going up my hill to 55.2mpg :)

oh dear....were both turning in to old gits!!

although the lowest ive had on the way to work 22 miles is 34mpg! that was about the most i could get out of my old mk2 ibiza, so im regularly getting 54mpg on the way to and from work now which is a huge bonus :)

anyway...insurance...

lets face it..its going to be expensive on whatever car these days! specially "hot" diesels and petrols

Bell, Admiral and Elephant all only count accidents within the last 3 years, penalty points have to be declared for 5 years on their policys though.

I can't help but agree with Keefy, 7 cars and 3 accidents in 4 years of driving is not bad luck and being a good karting driver has nothing to do with being responsible on the roads.

I'm 24, been driving 7 years and had 0 accidents. I also have paid for my own cars which I believe makes me appreciate them all the more and treat them with a little more care and respect.

Still, it's your money and your step sons life.
