FR TDI or Cupra R Petrol

Drove a LCR today, and wil be putting a kidney on Ebay today to raise funds, as I just have to have one! My mileage will be about 100 per week for work, so hopefully wont kill me on costs!
I was considering the TDi, but after driving the LCR the sound is just amazing, no need for my amps from my Pug, will be listening to the turbo spool up!

I have the FT TDI it is a very nice, quick car! quicker than alot of petrol motors, i got mine due to my mileage but having since moved i hardly do the miles i once did. i could have got the R and if i knew i wasnt going to do the miles i would have had one

Well, I took the Cupra R TDI for a spin today and loved it. The 150BHP Sooty engine was quicker than I thought it would be and I like the interior, the exterior and the handling. Ok, with a Seat dealer in the passenger seat I could hardly "extreme it" but I did floor it in a variety of gears to see what the torque really gave me. So far I'm impressed by the versality of the "package"

I would describe the TDi as a civilised sports car. One I'd be happy the missus can tame as it seems equally as happy at 30 as it does at 80 in fourth gear.

I test drive the petrol cupra 225 Bhp next Saturday afternoon !! I'll report back. :D

I'm trying to figure out how I can make a TDI mine at present!! :funk:

thanks for the comments folks [B)]

ps...a mate and I discussed a new hobby, namely going round every dealer test driving their fast cars at the weekend. Fun on their bill !! :woot:

when we were looking to buy ours new 18 months ago, we test drove a TDI and LCR back to back in the same morning, with the same dealer, over the same test route that I know well round the local area.

Ended up plumping for the LCR - I found it picked up much better at any revs/any gear than the TDI, which surprised me at the time. I was by no means trying to rule out the diesel, as I've driven plenty and appreciate the way they offer greater punch in the mid range.

I'm averaging 7k a year in the LCR, and apart from 1 tyre due to a puncture, and 1 service have had no expense with the car at all.

As for choice - what you're doing is the way to go in terms of trying both. My wife drives the LCR with no problems at all, and loves having the power there when she wants it. Usual transport is a Passat wagon with slush box (1.8T) so the LCR is a different ball game.

If you don't intend to do 15k+ a year petrol will work out no more expensive overall IMHO.

I'm faced with what to replace the Passat wagon with, and am torn between a 2.5TDI A4 or W8 Passat

Being a total petrol head and loving the noise and whole package of a car i went for a Leon Cupra and i do 25k per annum (company pay for all petrol though)

For me, as much sense as the TDI makes in terms of economy, the noise and atmosphere and general enthusiastic driver type that i am is so much more suited to a petrol ehngined car.

My dad has the ALtea FR TDI and it is superb and very quick, however whn im giving it some stick down back roads etc i persaonlly dont think u can better the petrol version.

On 12k a yr i would not even hesitate to go for an LCR.

EDIT

As above post says, i have actually calculated in the past, and two cars costing the same in value, one petrol and one diesel, the saving u make is very very small on that milage - especially when u consider escalating fuel costs etc

I am working so cant give a full answer but when people are comparing an FR to LCR in terms of speed/acceleration forget it!

My best friend got an LCR and he trounces be each time. HOWEVER he does say he has to push hard so it is a complement to the FR...

When your talking about Standard LCR and Standard FR

Mod them and it can be a different situation in various ways....

depends if the to be owner gets the modding bug....

Hi all,
I went thru this last year.
I tried the LC and the LC tdi. Because I do a lot of runs on trunk roads ( and have clocked up 28,000 in a year) I went for the LC TDi, with the intention re-mapping when the warranty expires. I didn't try the LCR cos I assumed the ride would be too hard
Ultimately as has been said many times, you don't buy an LCR if cost is an issue. The LC petrol I drove was much more fun but I got 34,000 out of a set of Michelin Pilots on the front and the rears will last another 10,000. I also get 45-55 mpg - worth it even though diesel is more expensive.
I also pay lower road tax than my wife's diesel Focus and pay about £180 for insurance with Highway who will allow me to re-map.
The mid range torque is beautiful
Hope this helps

Well I drove the 225 Cupra today and WOW!! I couldn't stop chortling. I was well planted on the twisty country lanes and It was very very eager to keep pulling no matter what the gear!

I couldn't stop it spinning the wheels in first no matter what the ESP tried. You just can't get the power down onto the road without backing off a bit so it seems !!!

Loved it.....but gonna get the TDi. I'd get points on my license with the Cupra I know it !!

Please forgive me if somebody already spoke about this but I have had both
Leon Tdi 150 FR+ remapped
Leon LCR 225 Standard
And I will think if the Tdi's are honest then living in the UK and all quoting these 300 pounds of tork and above is quite pointless because you can not get the power down it is to slippery.
Had a race with my Bro he was in his wifes Magane 130tdi of the lights.
I pulled of and just could'nt get the poower down in 1st,2nd and when changed into 3rd felt the wheels spin pulled one maybe to cars infront.
Crap to say I had 190bhp and 320 pounds of tork he has 130bhp and 200 or so tork. I also ran Goodyear Eagle F1's so good tyres.
My standard Lcr would kill a remapped Tdi this time of year.
I know I have had both.
Also owned a Ibiza Cupra Revo'd not good traction on them either.

From the Mrs mouth she did not like the Tdi she said it was like a on/off switch.

Still got the Lcr and I love it..............

Remember Tdi's be honest have you got traction..............

I had a wee play with a Focus ST the other night between roundabouts. Coming out of the first roundabout behind him from around 40mph he couldnt pull away but going into the next roundabout and trying to get the power down coming out of it was nigh impossible! it was a bit damp though and once I change my front tyres to match the F1s on the rear I hope i will be able to fare better! :)

From a standing start in the dry, i have no problems awith grip.

On the move and on a straight run it wants to keep pulling all the way to crazy speeds. have to say though, much better when remapped...

Yeah i must admit the power in a remapped Tdi is amazing and in the dry yeah ok it just grips but not cornering in the first 2 gears, but we live in blighty and it rains alot, also with the Tdi I only got 8,000 out of the fronts not good me thinks.

Also all I keep hearing is the Tdi is cheaper to run on tax fuel insurance......ect and in the same breath people saying is what you want to do is get it remapped, if so you need a reserve for when the clutch goes because it will plus new pads disks suspension, all adds up.

So in short get aTdi 150 if you need to save money but do not mod it.. SAVE MONEY
Or get a Lcr and tinkle a little or a lot but if you do 10-12 thou a year Petrol is the way...

ps My Mrs has a Ibiza 130 tdi same problem no traction in damp, cold or wet but it is fun..........(she buys the tyres)

For 12k miles/year at current pump prices and guessing average mpg;

LCR (Average 30mpg) = £1,600 / year

FR TDI (Average 45mpg) = £1,100 / year

Thats still a hefty saving in my view...

Though taking into account the TDI was dearer it may cancel it out...:headhurt:
