As above really, what is anyone with a 1.2 getting out of their Ibiza Mk4's.

My brother's car seems to be hovering around the 270 miles to a full tank which seems awfully poor. That is a mix of local and motorway driving.

Car is on a 54 plate with 11k on the clock, previous owner had it for 3 years and barely racked up 10k in this time.

Could the vehicle need a change of spark plugs?

Its been serviced regularly and a few months ago a green panel air filter was put in but not much change in terms of fuel consumption.
Tyre pressures are all fine.

Bit stuck as to what else it could be.

Any comments or suggestions much appreciated

Thanks

if driven under 3000 revs then it'll go forever, get about 400 miles out of a tank if i drive it grandad spec...but as to get anywhere you have to rev it high it's a biatch and it will rape you on petrol!
try some redex (about £1.20 a bottle from halfords) and fill it up with super unleaded once and you'll notice a difference, will clean the engine out and you'll get more miles :)

other than that, if you're not in a hurry then change gear at about 2.5 - 3k revs and you'll be ok - just got about 200 mile out of £20 which ain't too bad, commuter traffic stop starting too!

How about some Forte Specialist Injector Cleaner, its more or less the same as redex but better quality. May do the trick.

With the car being driven very little by the previous owner, could the fuel filter be clogged up or something?!

I can get near that in my cupra and thats without motorway driving :p

Granted, thats driving like a granny

I average at 37.5mpg.

Apart from that one tank (when i go to the pumps it's when i'm empty and i fill it up to the brim using the theory of i need fuel to get to the petrol station) i didn't go over 3k revs (which actually limits me to 59mph!!!!!!!!!) where i got over 40.

i have a 1.2 12v and i feel it drinks fuel like water, i have a k&n indauction kit on and not sure if it affects it much, i think i roughly got about 280 miles out a full tank, and tht wasnt including motorway driving, tht was just goin daily around town and to work etc....just local trips, its costing me a bomb.

rev it less, keep it under 3k and you'll see a HUGE difference! if you're only going round town then you won't need to rag it anyway, in 5th at 3k you're doing 60ish, try that!

I have a 1.4 16v sport, i get about 300ish miles to a tank. Thats with abit of motorway and around town driving. Thats also with a rather "enthusiastic" driving style. So i reckon if i stay below 3000 revs i could easily get more than 300 a tank at the moment im gettin about 34ish mpg.....

i used to get 350+ out of my old 1.2! 2500rpm change gear just touching the accelerator!! on my trip to scotland i got 450 out of a tank :p

I would expect your car to have a very sooted-up catalyst, needing a long fast trip on motorways to fry it good & proper. Use DENSO Iridium-tipped plugs to help it burn clean ( £28 for a set of 3, off the net ).
