Looks like great economy right up to the point where I run out of fuel!

Any ideas please? wiring or sensor?
Common places for it to fail

Save me a dealer's bill

thx all

I thought my fuel gauge had broken cos did 90 miles on a 250 mile journey and the needle hadn't moved!

Maybe the float in the tank has got stuck or summat? If these have floats in them. I know the older cars did.

first of all check the wiring on the back of the guages, they can come lose and because its a bag long connector its possible for one end to be worked lose etc. i am pretty sure you cannot buy the guages sperately and i think from memory its all on one main circuit board. However do check that the dial is moving by removing front glass and moving with tfinger.

Then the next likely ( and probably most possible fault) is from the tank itself, Firstly check the signals on the wires going to the fuel guage, ( this my be best to get an auto electrician to do ) and you will need a wiring diagram. but i think it may be a case of taking it to an auto elelctrician if your not that hot with tools.

ant how do you check the connector in the back of the dials? is there an easy way to do it without removing them?

no you need to remove them, however its pretty easy and can be done just about without removing the steering wheel. yopu need to remove the surround firstthen that exposes the screws or torx ( can't remember which type) to remove the instrument guage, then pull forward slowly bearing in mind there are 2 sockets that need to be removed, they will not travel too far as well so quite hard to squeeze your hand behind to release. Then either using an wiring plan trace which are th input wires and check with a multimeter to ensure they are getting a signal. You should be able to see this signal when switching the ignition. however bear in mind that the instrument cluster also houses the immobiliser so best to have this reconnected to ensure the fuel ciurcuit is all active as it would be in normal conditions. as with out the instrument cluster the car will never run

my old 1.2 used to do that, would stay on full for the first 100miles!
