when i had my 1.4 it started to whine when i was on a trip to some relatives up north (360 miles there).

oddly enough the whine only started happening in 5th and worked its way to 4th too..... puzzled and slightly worried, i jacked up the car and removed the gear box oil.
i then replaced the oil with some high quality stuff and took the car for a drive... no more whirry noises :D

i recon its just because your gearbox oil is low :D
if it was bearings it would be happening in all gears

It is on all gears mate, and is progressively worse in higher gears where the exit shaft of the gearbox is spinning faster, so its probably the bearings on that shaft which are shagged. Oil change is a good idea though :D

ouch :( thats going to be expensive!

best of luck with the fix / replacement. hate to say it but have you ever considered selling the car since this issue has arose ?

the car is probably only worth £1k or so at the moment and you will be spending at least 300-400 on a new box (unless you pick up a used one from a scrappy)

Nah mate. ill be able to get a new box in for between £100-200 :D

Thanks for the concern though! :)

Should get round to fitting the new gearbox at the weekend :) just want to make sure ive got things right.

Do i just undo bellhousing and inner CV joint bolts and remove the old gearbox, then put new oil in the new box and bolt it back on?

Also is it worth fitting a new throw-out bearing while im there??

Help very much appreciated
Thanks in advance!

:D
