I need assistance again ( and possibly a new car!)
A few days ago while I had the car up on the lift getting it serviced I noticed signs of what looked like a major leak which turned out to be gearbox oil, the mechanic poked around and traced it back to the seal which had pushed itself out. He thought it had been caused by a build up of pressure from a blocked breather, which turned out not to be blocked at all. Anyway I've just had to leave the car in again today with the same problem gearbox oil everywhere I've parked! so he has put sealant around the lip of the seal a told me to drive it easy for a couple of days till it cures. Has anyone had this problem or an idea of what's causing the seal to push itself out?
(Sorry for the long post)

The mechanic described it as a blanking plate, it's located on the side of the gearbox.

End Cap? The black cap you can see if you remove the passenger arch liner?

You can pick them up for less than £5.

Not sure why yours would be leaking. If it is that part...

Yup, there's two caps a 79mm and an 80 something mm cap. Whichever one it is I think it's now worked its way out again as I can see its dripping on the cardboard I put underneath the tray.
I really hate this type of problem, I was planning to sell it next month and get an Exeo, but I'll have to get this sorted first...
Will order the two caps from stealers today hopefully that will cure it...
Shouldn't complain too much I suppose it has done 210k

Success (hopefully) the seat parts diagram shows a sur clip which should hold the end cap in place, will have a look tonight see if it's missing..

It's the black 79mm cap, it was well caved in so was probably in contact with the bearing/shaft which also has play in it so was more the likely pushing the end cap out. The plastic fins on the edge of the cap where also knackered...
There is a ring inside holding the bearing so you where right the circlip has nothing to do with the end cap (I blame the crappy picture from the seat parts dept!)

You can buy a shim that sits between the housing and circlip to stop it moving. Only really needed if you're suffering from gear changing issues, whines and clutch drag.
