gti 2.0 16v engine

in terms of reliability what is then engine like?

basically i was gonig for a mk4 diesel ibiza, but due to sorting out impending mortgage i can't afford the price of the car

looking for something with more power than my 1.4 and the gti seems like the best option for the future, as fuel is not going to be an issue and i need a car which i can afford to buy outright for which i can spend 2-2.5k

most of the 16v's i have seen have been or getting on towards 100k, now i assume if looked after the engine will keep going for much longer than that?

basically in the mind set of not really wanting a motor with over 100k on the clock but doubt i will get this, and just wondering how reliable the engine is when it gets to over 100k on the clock

no different to any other engine, service history is best but no guarantee. also bear in mind most cars this age will have had 4,5,6+ owners by now.
look at 8v's as well, just as good day to day.

well looking for something with a good amount more power than now, the 16v seems a good option for the price range

thought about a vw corado or golf vr6 or something similar as well

I've had my 1998 S plate Ibiza Cupra since new. It's the 2.0 8v model & it's plenty fast enough. Regards problems - I've had none to speak of but have serviced it every year. Current mileage is about 91K & it still drives like it did from new. I reckon if you find one with history you'll be ok. But look out for rusty arches!

yeah i have a mk2 1.4 already so bodywork wise i know what to look for

shame my car lacks the power really as it great otherwise

Corrado 16vs are slow, because of the Gearbox choice (passat gearboxes) if you're going to get one of them then make it the 1.8 16v

VR's will cost you more than your mortgage in petrol lol

i currently live about a 20min drive to work, and then do other bits around during the week too which is why currenly petrol is something i have to think about

but as i am moving into town it means petrol costs will be cut, not to mention the people i go and see during the week i will live with so it will cut down petrol a lot not to mention i may be close enough to cycle in a few days a week

basically i just want a quicker fun car which aint going to cause huge problems with stuff needing to be done all the time. so far my 1.4 mk2 has caused me no problems but i need new front brakes and pads, i could convert my current motor but the cost is just not effective enough

130bhp on the old 1800 kr 16v not as quick as the 150bhp 2.0 abf (not 9a)

picked up my 8v for £300 with 115k on it . after some hard graft to sort out probs ( rust , brakes , susp etc) its all mot'd up and goin well . the engine is defo good , and im sure the poor thing has been sh£$ged in its time . engines are good . look at the golfs for sale on ebay/pistonheads 150k , 180k etc .

i think the 2.0 16v corrado only had 136 bhp same as the passat. (kr engine got 139 bhp) something to do with emishions. think its got a small inet manifold 42mm ish not the 50mm one on the golf and ibiza. any way dont think you'll go far wrong with a 2.0 8v or 16v ibiza or codoba, had to say that cuz i got one

Another vote for the 2.0 16v ABF here, mines FSH and 3 owners from new on 116k and has only needed wear and tear items. Make sure you get one with good service history and a cambelt change as these arent cheap. Insurance is pretty good these days if your over 21 and have a few years NCB. Look out for gear box noises and worn out clutches same as any other VAG really, as well as all the usual Ibiza/Cordoba issues.

Depends what your going to be driving it for really, if you want something thats torquey and good to drive around town you want the 2.0 8v, if you want a road blaster go for the 2.0 16v.

I had a Corrado 2.016v. 138bhp as standard but all it took was £10 for a cam from a KR head an an hour to fit it and that got me 160bhp.

Cracking car but I think mine had had a rough life before hand so everything apart from the engine went wrong. The person who bought it got a good car though, I'd fixed everything!

I'm a big champion of the ABF to, my old MK2 had 75K on with no service history when I bought it and it felt alright but a roadside oilchange (Iwas driving the length of the country home), new plugs, injector clearner, 10K boost & a 600+ mile thrash home and my god did it pull like a train, loved 5-6.5K rev's would pull clean and hard.
Never RR but my mate had his Ibiza Chipped, de catted and Exhaust RR'd at 167.2 and mine would stay level!

Hence I want another one, bit of engine tuning, some shorted gearing and an LSD and I reckon it'll eat 172's alive!

Anyway it's a VAG engine, don't be to concerned about the mileage they last forever even if a little neglected, my flatmates 216K MK2 Golf Gti is a testement lucky if it's had more than 2 services in 4 years yet starts on the button and pulls suprisinly well.
