the plot thickens...

good luck with it and hope they get it sorted. i`d be asking what caused head gasket damage and what does he mean by a cylinder gone? and what caused it.

i`m no expert but i dont get the cylinder thing.

Cheers No, I don't get it either and the person on the phone was just reading off a sheet that said what was wrong so they didn't know. However, it seems to me that I'm getting pretty much a new (or newly overhauled)engine and as the cambelt needs replacing at 60,000 ish anyway it might be worth waiting until I get it back rather than askng for money back.

But again, willing to be advised.

I'd want that car to be checked over very carefuly before parting with my cash. Something sounds fishy, I think I'd try take a independant type assesor down to look over it and listen to the reasons why a cylinder is gone etc........

if a cylinder is damaged or piston/rod it would need a rebuild.

curious more than anything as to what went wrong. seems harsh to think this happened in 12mins.

theres a few of us running big power so any engine failure gives us the heebi jeebies;)

has the car got a full service history etc? the main thing is they sort the problem and your happy.

Have got FSH. Speaking to the garage - again- they're going to rebuild and check for anything else that might be wrong. I'm then going to take it for a test drive (as in, a MAJOR one) and let them know whether I'm going to keep it.

n the meantime I'm driving from Yorkshire to Brighton in a Fiesta this Saturday. So if any of you are on the M1 and see a really p***ed off looking bloke in a '57 plate Fiesta with Evans Halshaw written on the side, give me a wave as you cruise by...

Walk away from it please! sale of goods act etc - money back.

Go find another unmolested from a 'spotty grease monkey technician at a main dealer' car. Sorry but I don't have time for these departments at these sort of main dealers. They do not inspire confidence.

Major surgery with a YTS muppet - no thanks!

I think i'd be tempted to say walk away. Looks like a nightmare in the waiting. Not to mention i'd expect replacing the engine has the potential to depreciate the car and would bring about difficult questions when you come to sell it. "No.. no I didn't abuse it but it had to have the engine replaced"

You'll find another :)

Oh and if you do back out, perhaps post the reg number on here ;-)

SO..THE RESOLUTION

the head cylinder sent away and skimmed, new cambelt, new water pump. Collected the car two days ago on the proviso that if ANYTHING goes wrong with it in the next couple of weeks (got a couple of long trips coming up) it's going back to them for good.
Took it our for a long spin yesterday...Oh My God, is this not the best car in the World....I'm in love!!!

So, basically a big thanks to all who commented on here. I really sounded like I knew what I was talking about when questioning the people at the garage, and as mentioned before I am pretty ignorant about the mechanics of cars.

Now, where do I get a Cupra tattoo done..... ;-)

If its been fixed up properly thats the main thing, maybe you were just unlucky. I worked for a main dealer and they give cars no mechanical attention before they send them out other than a look over, which isnt going to find a head gasket problem.

Make sure you've got good warranty on it, that can be redeemed elsewhere should Evans Halshaw go tits up and i have no doubt it'll give you many happy miles. I had the head redone on my cordoba and its been a huge improvement since.
