Hi everyone.

The engine management light came on a few days ago. I had a basic reading done and i think it came up as something to do with the oil not getting to the camshaft??

Last night the car starting making loud noises under the bonnet as if the whole thing was ceasing up! I have left it with my local garage to look in to it.

If there was a lack of oil in/around the camshaft can it easily be repaired or will it be too late and I would need to start looking for a new car?

I know nothing about cars so would appriciate any help,

thanks

Will

Sounds like you have low oil pressure most likely because of a blocked oil pick (located in sump) if your getting tappety sound on idle most like try hydraulic lifters , first thing to do is check the oil pick up. The code I think you got is camshaft position is over retarded which often relates to low oil pressure

If i have drove about 3 / 4 miles slowly while it was making loud tappet noises would it have done any damage?

Phoned the garage and they have told me that this is what they think is wrong with it. Is it an expensive fix to unblock it all and get it working? If it does work the garage said that I might have damaged the head??? Would it mean that even if I can get it all unblocked and sorted that it might all be in vein???

The head should not be damaged, however the camshaft or other moving parts may have started to wear rapidly.
Removing the camshaft cover should allow you to look at the camshafts and see if they are badly worn.
If they look worn, its best to have them removed and inspected/replaced, if they look ok then dont worry.

If you spotted it quickly, then not much damage should have been done. (Hopefully)
These cars have robust engines and people would be suprised to hear how long you could drive them for without ANY oil without causing major damage!!

The loud tapping sound you heard was most likely your cam chain tensioner when the pick up block this is the most common thing to go. Mine did the same although I got no EML, if it is the cam chain tensioner your looking at £700 plus to fix it! The part alone is £300 then it's a good 3-4 hour job :( I got one from eBay new for £150 but they don't seem to have them any more then paid a maye on here £50 to come and do it for me ;) I got lucky tho get It cleaned up and see how she runs if it still make loud tapping sounds on idle then get a video of it and let's se how she sounds :)

The garage rekon that I could end up needing a new engine?! Apart from eBay does anyone know where to look for another cupra engine? Also how much would I be looking at paying?

 tell them to go F*** them selfs and take it somewhere else ;)

Ha ha. The garage has pointed me in the direction of a chap that will clean the pick up in the sump? and fingers crossed I haven't done any damage. Looking at around £400. Does that seem ok?

do it yourself man its really easy a few bolts and some new oil ;)

I'm sure he is going to do something else aswel. I can't remember. I'll double check tomorrow. I usually try and do things myself. I just don't have a clue on this one. Is there a guide anywhere?

thats crazy the parts including the best oil wouldnt be no more then £80 then say no more then 2 hours for a good garage to do. So no more then £150. Its fairly easy if ure a confident diy mechanic. The worst bit is the 3 bolts or 2 cant remember which you have to get through the gearbox holes.

Just spoke to the bloke. He said he will clean/unblock sump change the pick up pipe, change oil and filters
