Ibiza died - just cut out

Hello,

Was happily trundling along at 60mph and the engine just suddenly died. All the dash lights came on and I coasted to the side of the road.

All the electrical systems work and the engine will turn over but it wont start.

I'm going to get it VCDS scanned tomorrow - is there anything else I can check or will the scan reveal all?

My hunch is one of the fuel pumps. The high pressure one is expensive isn't it?

Timing belt. I could prise enough of the top cover off to see a belt still there so that 'looks' ok.

Some electrical immobiliser issue? Some electrical sensor issue? Can one duff sensor eg crank cause this?

2010 2l diesel FR. 65K miles. Been faultless for the last 2 years and 35K miles. Fuel and air filters changed 10K miles ago.

At first I would check all fuses. Also check the fuses above battery for continuity.

The tyre pressure warning was me forgetting you need to press and hold it. I was repeatedly pressing it for a second. Still asleep, d'oh. It got new tyres fitted the night before. I assume thats what triggered it.

Looks to me like the engine control module has some problem. Check fuses under the steering wheel and inside the box on the right (picture).

Making some progress now...

Fuse 32 has blown. Marked as 'engine control unit' in the book. Borrowed the fuse for the 12V socket, turned the key and.... it's alive!

Decided to call it a day there. Ran out of time and daylight. I'll give it another VCDS scan in the morning.

Obviously concerned what caused the fuse to blow and after replacement will it just blow soon after again? Need to go and buy some fuses.

Among other reasons it could be a bad ground connection, a overload caused by the ECU, a short circuit (a wire damaged that is touching the chassis) a bad connection, etc.

If you did anything in your car recently I would check that first.

I would check voltage at ECU, measure block 053 under the engine (module 01) and compare with other units, for example power steering module 44 (measure block 001 and 004).

And other times they just blow for no reason, but if it blows more than once then you have a problem for sure.

As I said above if there is no errors the only thing you can check with vcds that I know of is the voltage. engine module -> measure block 053

When the voltage is low the current increases to compensate causing the fuse to blow.

Also check if the battery clamps are tight (check if they don't move). If they move could be there the problem, but be careful not to overtighten, only 6 or 7nm tight wich is pretty low using a wrench.

I checked the battery yesterday and everything appeared clamped down and solid. However I was unable to get full access to the battery due to the battery cover. I'm doing this in the work car park with limited tools.

So first VCDS scan after fuse 32 was replaced yesterday PM.

The measuring blocks thing to check the ECU voltage I need to do this with the engine running?

The codes don't clear by itself you need to clear them and then check if they come back.

Yes with engine running and compare it with other control units, for example power steering 001 and 004 but could be another, or compare with the voltages of a multimeter if you have it.

Also the ECU ground is at 4 , check it if you can.

so - cleared the codes this morning and I've just been for a short run (round the car park) and a longer 2-3 mile run. Car ran fine, no dash lights and a VCDS scan after both runs still shows no errors.

I couldn't do the measure block thing with the engine module, that tab is not available.

I did measure the PAS module which was showing a voltage hovering between 13.8 and 14V.

That voltages are normal, but the goal was to compare the two to see if it's losing voltage at the ECU.

yup, I understand that but the 'meas. blocks' button on the 01- engine control module under Basic Functions was greyed out. It wasn't available.

That's strange, mine isn't. Maybe it's your engine that doesn't permit that.
By the way the other voltage was fluctuating between 13,8V and 14V without moving the car? it should be constant, it changes over time between 14,4V and 13,8V but only after a while.

Over all I guess you will have to wait to see what happens, I really don't know what more can you check, that voltage is irrelevant without comparing to the ECU.

I don't know if it is frequent for the Ibiza to break fuses without reason, so I ask, did anyone reading this thread had fuses blown for no apparent reason?

I'll go back and double check. It was updating every second or so i think. It wasn't a constant value. Yes, the car was stationary, at idle.

I'll just need to keep a torch and a supply of fuses in the car. Assuming it doesn't die again I'll just need to give it a scan every weekend or so to see if anything re-appears.

If it dies again then there is a problem somewhere you should check, I don't know how frequent are fuse break without a reason but it happens. It's very important to use a similar fuse.

So I did about 25 miles last night with no issues. Gave it a vcds scan after that and all was clear.

Managed about 4 miles this morning and it blew again. Replaced the fuse and drove home.

I think all I can do is check the battery connections and the earths when I've got time over the weekend. After that I'll need to find a good auto electrician.
