Ibiza TDi FR 130 - Loss of power following cam belt service

Hi All,

Had my car back for a couple of weeks now following a cam belt service (plus all the usual service changes). I noticed pretty much straight away that it wasn't as quick (oh and the aircon is making a really annoying whistling sound).

When the turbo kicks in, about 2k RPM, it used to be pretty savage. You know, TC would light up and there'd be a little torque steering. Anyway, that doesn't happen anymore. Also, when going from 40-70 in 4th (which used to be an absolute delight) it now feels sluggish.

Basically, it feels like the turbo has lost power or something. Sure, it feels smother on power delivery but only because there's less to deliver.

Anyone ever heard of this before or know what might be causing it? I'll be calling the garage soon (Midland VW - can't fault them. Excellent service and competitive too) to see if they have any ideas or wouldn't mind taking a look at it.

Cheers,

John

You tried VAG-COM? I'd try that first, might be a simple fix. See if there's anyone in your area on here that could take a look for you.

I don't have access to anyone who has VAG-COM. I'm in Birmingham though so if anyone can take a look it would be worth a beer I reckon! You think it's probably best to call the garage?

Not sure where the whistling noise is coming from. If I switch the aircon off, it stops completely. They did change the pollen filter so I suppose it could be that? Question is, how do I check it?

Thanks

Check that the intercooler pipe is connected properly.

Look next to the altenator. Pipe comes along the side of the plastic engine cover then down beside the altenator.

Mine hadn't been connected properly and ended up busting the lugs that hold it together. You will notice a louder whistling noise due to this as the charged air is escaping.

Be careful not to give it too much right foot, if it comes off completely the car runs like a dog firing out all kinds of black smoke

Stick your head under the glove box with the aircon on full wack and you will see a small plastic rectangle with clips on and air escaping have a play like I did I took it out put it back in they had not pushed the clips together properly to close it so air was escaping.

To change the cambelt, some of the intake pipes would have been removed.
Chances are they've not been reconnected properly, and maybe one of the joints has partially blown apart - meaning your losing boost (this could well be what the whistling noise is!)

Thanks for all this. Really appreciate it.

Will have a look tonight and if I can't spot anything I'll get on to the garage.

Will update tomorrow.

I had a similar thing happen to mine, one of the intake pipes had not been re-connected properly and I was losing boost from the tubo, had a quick look under the bonnet and re-connected the pipe, back to normal.
