Instrument Cluster Problems

Hi

Wondering if any of you guys have come across this before..

I've got an 130PD TDI Sport on a 52 plate

About 16 Months ago maybe more my Tacho suddenly started to intermittently fail, it basically works but it offsets itself and continues to work but with a huge offset. Idle is saying just over 5000RPM. Had it checked out with a local specialist on the VAG COM and it reported back that there wasn't a problem, well there clearly! I rang my local dealer and they hadn't heard of the problem and said that you may need a new instrument cluster at a cost of around £500. So of course I then thought I can live without it at that price...

But now my Temp gauge has gone. Not intermittent this time just no signal at all when all the other gauges are reading normal bar the tacho.

First of all has anyone experienced these problems? or anyone have any fixes?tips?

I need to check the ground wiring to the instument cluster. is it easyily accessable?

Has anyone removed the dash? or bought a new one due to this type of problem?

Any help would be much appreciated.

The temp gauge problem could just be the temp sender has failed

The rev counter one is a bit odd but if you do a search there is info on here but it's not good news info, the dealer is probably right with the new cluster diagnosis

remove and strip down the cluster from its casing the connector that is soldered onto the pcb on the left hanside will be loose due to poor soldering get an electronics repairer to resolder the terminals.

I had this last year. Its a very common on 6 dial cluster for ibiza.

Its caused by the solders degrading on the main socket behind the cluster (positioned around thr 120mph mark. There's about 40/50pins that need resoldering.

I removed the cluster and dismantled it myself then took it to a computer shop to resolder. No problems so far since last year.

If you push down on the 120mph mark sometimes it comes back to life but this wont resolve the issue.

If after soldering the problem persists then it's more than likely the microprocessor on the cluster has failed. This happened to me. Do you have the SKC or PIN for your car? you can buy second hand VDO clusters that will work, even if they're 4 dial and only go to 140mph. They will need programming in to the car using VAG-COM, you will need the PIN for the replacement clusters though, this can be read with them fitted to the car using VAG-TACHO or similar software, proper diagnostics equipment etc.

Hope that makes sense, I'm in a rush :)

Cheers for that reply priezti, my gauges have been resolded before I got the car so there wount be much poin doing it again when it didn't fix the problem in first place, so I was thinking of changing the cluster, would the new cluster have to be off a diesel ibiza, and does it matter of model of ibiza like would mk3 fit it? Also how hard is reprogramming them? I have vagcom but it's not a full version, also how would I reprogram the key immobiliser?

I have the same problem. When I start I get the beeps of high temperature and the flashing red light ( continuous), my fuel level is always empty, sometimes my speed or RPM falls away and when I stop sometimes they come back.
I resoldered everything but it didn`t went away.
So I bought an other cluster and installed it but I have still the same problem!!
I checked many cables for damage but couldn`t find anything. In the motorcompartiment I checked the grounds but everything was ok.
HELP! :D
Ps: When I use outputtest in VAGCOM, everything is ok. The sweep works perfectly and the 1/2 way of the reading too.

Not all resolder jobs work unfortunately, make sure you've got a mate with VCDS to code the new instrument cluster to the car.

They all have the same fault. Every single one of them Go the same way. Bite the bullet and get an updated one or sit for ever scratching your head
