K&N direct replacement air filter

Took my car to a Diesel specialists today whinging about MPG, like normal and they advised me to get a direct replacement K&N filter which would allow my car to breath
better and thus increase the MPG. They advised that in winter the paper filters work less efficiently due to moisture in the air and this then makes the car drink more fuel, sounds good to me and so i've ordered one, however what i'd like to know is has anyone else got one of these and if so did they notice any improvement in mpg.....Looking on the K&N website they mention maybe a small increase in bhp but being an old sod that appeal diminished about 20 years ago.

thats a right load of rubbish, you'll have poor fuel economy in the cold because the engine is running cold and takes longer to heat up, nothing to do with the air filter. if you want better fuel economy in cold weather then you should block off half of your rad to allow the engine to heat up faster or have a re-map.

Theory sounds off to me but I have a K&N panel filter and recommend them.
My car smoked less after fitting and felt a little more responsive. MPG unaffected as far as I noticed.

Agree with above. Sounds like a load of bull!

I've a pipercross filter and I didn't notice any MPG gains either. Just made mine smoother & increased pick up when in 5th gear & put foot down. But that's about it

Well its only £50 quid and it seems like from the responses that i may notice some differences, preferable or not. I moaned to him cos primarily i'd been been out on a run a couple of nights before 3 up on the motorway at night doing about 80 and only getting 44mpg and earlier yesterday did about 50 miles on the motorway 1 up and only got 52 max at about 75. When you look at the tech data for a tdi 130 average mpg should be 53mpg therefore i would have assumed i'd have achieved the same mpg i had in the past on similar journeys which was 56/57 mpg. The old guy in the garage seemed genuine saying that he could put the car on his diagnostics system but that then he'd have to charge me £60. He said my mpg sounded reasonable and that if i wanted to try and improve it then he recommended going onto the web and buying one of these filters. He did'nt rob me at all and if things don't improve it's only £6/7 quid for another paper one...

Neo mentioned that since he has had one fitted to his car it has smoked less so surely this is down to diesel being burned more efficiently isn't it ?

I saw that MJ recommended a re-map however my cars done 102k and I am concerned what affect the added torque might have on my clutch/flywheel etc and that is why i have never considered going down this route..Also what affect does the air filter have on warming the engine up, surely the air temperature remains the same regardless of what type of filter it passes through, or does the volume of air play a part here..

Had a remap done on my 1.9tdi PD130 at 105,000 miles. Almost 25,000 miles later, clutch and flywheel are fine. :)

Previously remapped a 1.9tdi 110 at 144,000 and even at 172,000 miles had no problems.

52mpg sounds fine to be honest!

and getting 44mpg may have been down to your driving style maybe?

or i could just be that because it's done quite a few miles, if it's not been serviced properly?

I don't know, so many things can lead to lower mpg!

If the car should be fine with a map, if its been looked after then its not really an issue no matter what the milage is, i have a k&n and to be fair you wont notice the difference in mpg or power, as the gains are usually only a few bhp, but there are a few mods to the airbox that can help get abit more. as for low mpg could be a number of things, tyre pressures, how well the cars been lookeed after, what oil it has, tyres, there are soo many factors to consider.

think it's me just being to tight...Car had full service 3000 miles back, every tank has millers added, tyres are at 33psi and my tracking was done a month back. looks like i might toy with the idea of a map maybe..anyone know of a place round west london..

I know a good guy who is sorts north london that does really good maps, i can try and get his details as i know him through someone, otherwise there are loads of places on here, one of them must be close by, but i would highly reccomend a panel filter before the map as it helps quite abit.
