Hope someone can help,

Wednesday morning got in the car and was driving to work (only about 2 miles over speed bumps and side roads so car doen't really get a run) and the car kangarood a couple of times. By the time I got to work the orange brake warning light had come on (the one in the middle on the bottom triangle with a circular arrow.). When I started the car at lunchtime to test it the light didn't come on but the kangarooing was still there. I checked under the bonnet and removed the top engine cover to look at the coilpacks and general wires etc. Coilpacks and plugs were replaced about three months ago at a local garage. All was good with the coilpacks but I did find one wire disconnected. I reconnected this and all seemed fine when I test drove it. I gave the car a decent run last night and it seemed fine again.

Then when I drove it this morning it was kangarooing again and the orange light came on again. I've seen in one thread that the orange light also points at the maf? Any body got any ideas before I take it to the garage?

The light you refer to is the traction control. Does the car "kangaroo" when the engine is warm or is it just a cold thing? Best thing to do mate is to get it vag-commed, where abouts do you live? if you live near me ill do it for free

Quick update

At lunchtime I drove home and car was kangarooing again. When I left again to go back to work (after 40 minutes) it was fine so it seems that the problem may only be if the engine is cold.

There have been a lot of views of this but not many replies so to give an update on the problem, it is still happening sometimes seems to happen more when it is cold but I did let it warm up to temperature this morning before driving and it still jumped sometimes. This afternoon it seemed fine. I am going to check the plugs this weekend but I have had new plugs and coilpacks within the last six months. I am also going to get it vag commed to get any codes.

Anyone got any other ideas?

i would have thought coil packs bu tseeing as theyre new have you checked the throttle body?

Maybe the CTS (coolant temp sensor) is faulty?
Can you get it scanned with vag-com?

Reading through the other threads I have found soemthing suggesting that the maf may be the problem. I have disconnected the maf and the traction control light came on straight away but the kangarooing seems to have gone.

Any comments please

Further update

I have now replaced the maf but need to reset the engine management to turn off the warning lights. Can I reset it by disconnecting the battery?

Yes dissconnect the negative for about 30mins then reconnect, then turn your ignition on and leave it for about 10mins, then you can start the car, warning light should be gone then this worked for me.

Right lets see now, another update.

Replaced the maf and reset the warning lights by disconnecting the battery. Car was perfect and I gave it a proper run down to Crawley from home down the M23 (about 20 miles at different speeds, not breaking the speed limit though . Everthing was fine until I was on my way back and the car started juddering again and the traction control light and the engine light both came back on.

Use carb cleaner and cotton buds and get someone to press the throttle with the ignition on to open the flap on the other side of the TB (you need to take it off 5mm allen key iirc)

Have you had the codes read? Would be the first thing to do, it could be any number of components.

my instant reaction is faulty maf.
the light you refer to is the traction control, which comes up if the maf fails, It may be the maf is providing a reading, but its significantly wrong, so the light may not be on all the time and the car may run poorly.

where did you get the replacement maf? if it solved the issue then it came back then this does seem to indicate you were on the right path to fixing it.
especially if running with it discconected solved the issue.
Its not unknown for new mafs to fail sooner rather than later,
although other issues could be maf related, but not the maf, - eg the electrical connection, or wiring.
make sure the connection is clean and has a good contact.

Another update

The car seems to be running fine now, just wanted to check if the traction control light should have gone out when the new maf was fitted. I have disconnected the battery and left it as recommended but the light is still on.

yes if the maf is faulty and a new one is fitted and this solves the issue then id expect the light to go out.

Where abouts are you from Paul? I think there are a couple of Sussex folk who have VAG-COM who might be able to help, that's if your South of Crawley of course.

Sunday update

Car seemed to be running fine but warning lights still on, so thought I would clean my old maf and try it back on the car. When I took it apart I noticed that my maf sensor was slightly differnet to the new one, it didn't have a diode on the side. So I cleaned the sensor and the inside of the old maf as best I could and put it back on the car and, hey presto, everything was fine. The replacement maf is on it's way back to the supplier for a refund.
