Thats an unfortunate case, and lucky you had the original bulbs to hand!
On my last Mk4 Ibiza it had aftermarket Xenon HID's fitted (being aftermarket, the car didnt feature headlight washers or auto-dipping beam) - the car flew through the MOT without any mention of the lights, or technicalities relating to them!
To an extent, it does come down to the individual who is testing your car.
You might have found the next garage just around the corner, would have not failed them either.

I've passed many MOT's in the past with blue laquer bulbs, leds etc. I think it depends on how pissy the tester wants to be. Heard some rediculous reasons for failure. End of the day it's a pair filament 501's they replace them with so let them fit those, give you your certificate, then put the leds back in before you leave their premises....
