i too have changed it but i can still access the website, i assume it just stops the program from accessing it.

All you have to do is to navigate to the file, open it in notepad, make the change and then click save

Mine isn't doing it, keeps telling me:

Cannot creat the C: \Windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file.
Make sure the path and file name are correct?

Any ideas why it says this? I am an admin on the pc I'm using...

I think all i did was to open the hosts file in notepad and add the following

127.0.0.1 ross-tech.com

127.0.0.1 ross-tech.com
127.0.0.1 www.ross-tech.com
127.0.0.1 update.ross-tech.com

Then save

Top man! I just copied and pasted the format you had, plus gave full controll to all users on the file then it saved fine, can't get on the ross tech page now.

I already opened the software I downloaded whilst connected to the internet, will this mess anything up? Or is it just when the cable is connected?

I deleted the software then will re install when the cable arrives...

Yeh thats ok to run software with cable disconnected.

Let us know how you get on with the cable as i had no luck with 812.4 software supplied, think the cables from china are bad clones and the serial numbers are banned or i updated it by mistake so now wont work on 805 or 812.

Use the software from the site on this thread, i have had no trouble with it.

Just make sure internet is off when you connect cable!!!!!!!!

i have now updated as per post 103 i and cant access the Ross tech website now, just hope my cable comes tomorrow... dont hold out much hope though :(

If done correctly then you should not see the website. Post up the contents of your host file on here, or PM me. Incase the Local host is different etc.

EDIT:
Woops, didnt see the next page on thi thread. Everythings sorted :)

So what software version are you using with this cable? the 704? What's the difference between the versions? Will 704 be capable of coming home lights, alarm chirp etc?

If it doesnt access the ross-tech website then you should be safe! I wouldnt have thought you would need to go down the route of blocking firewalls etc. I plan to dissconnect from the net when i try mine anyway, just to be safe.

From what i seen, the time thing only stops it asking you to update when you start the program.
Unless im mistaken and it infact doesnt let you use the program untill it is the latest version.

Im not atall sure on that.

Yeh i am using 704.1

Lets me do coming home - leaving home lights, not tried alarm yet.
Autoscans ok, lets me clear faults.
done some logs etc on MAF and boost ok, even lets you see your DPF level!!.

Not sure what you get with 805 or 812 but 704 works great for me.

Any help needed drop me a PM

Does anyone else know? the read me file on the disc reads as follows

"Please before the use the WINDOWS system time revision is on April 1, 2009"

It means you set your system time to that date April 1st 2009, or use a program called runasdate to do the same, it creates a shortcut to the date your set in the program, saves you changing system date.

If you do not change the date the software 812.4 or what ever version you are running will say its out of date..............

Yeah mine arrived this morning too not had chance to test it as I have been ordered to do the garden!!! Shall let you know how I get on or most likely will be back asking for help!!

Yeah just got my cable now, ran the v7 software off the before mentioned website and did the whole plug into car for 30seconds etc, detected it fine. Run some logs and removed some fault codes (my decat, but it'll come back I know)

Now going to read Dan GB's guide in the Mk2 FAQ and change some stuff like lights and alarm chirp
