I'm changing the rear brakes pads a Leon 1.9TDI. Having removed the caliper and old pads I can't compress the piston back into the caliper to put he new pads in. Infact I can't even fit the the old pads in as it appears the piston is fully extended.

Can anyone sudggest what is stopping the piston compressing back and how to overcome it?:(

Thanks

you need a wind back tool. the piston workes on a fine thread for the handbrake. if worst comes to worst and you cant use wind back tool then try pliers and push like hell when turning it. but try and get wind back tool

Windback tool

Where would i get a windback tool today.

Also could it be anything to do with ESP brakes sytem?

Yes hellfrauds do them and they work fine, about 20 quid if I remember right. Once you've got one its a doddle.

PS: Not needed on the front

If you cant find the windback tool, then a 15mm spanner works ;)

Thanks all, bought windback tool from Halfords and it was a doddle.

Keep an eye on the level in the resovior too, just incase its been topped up and pushing the piston back can make it overflow.

I always undo (as though bleeding) the nipple and let the excess out that way. Stops to chance of blowing a seal. ;)

as long as you dont open any bleed nipples you wont need to rebleed the system after taking the cap off
