I think you have to draw the line somewhere. I agree with all three views.

There comes a point where it makes economical sense to think "hold on i might as well put that 2-4 grand towards a newer better car".

In some scenarios though you can mod the car and there wont be anything else like it available as the mods make it unique. At the end of the day if modding is something you enjoy, then I would think of it as an activity/hobby that doesn't have to make economical sense because you enjoy it.

But sometimes Rob the cost isnt the issue, its to have a car that can not be brought by joe bloggs....
Plus the thought of buying a faster car would only lead to the inevitable... modding that to make it faster..
Iguess its a down to the person... some people want a faster car so they go to there selected dealer and buy another model, others take the existing one and make it faster than the dealers.... sometimes even for a price cheaper than buying a new car...

Argh i dont know, chalk and cheese as they say!?

I know exactly where you're coming from. I've been in this dilemma myself, just before I bought the LCR in fact!

I had a Celica before this, which has the potential to have a turbo kit fitted to it to give enough power to make it a very fast car. The cost for the full kit and installation would have been around £6k with a small contingency and the end result would have been a very good looking, great to drive, excellent handing and very fast car.

But after seeing one that had already been done go for less money than a standard version, and also seeing what else that £6k could be put towards, I started to change my mind. If money wasn't an issue it would have been done, for sure. But money is an issue, it is for all of us really, so spending £6k on something that would have been kept for a couple of years with no chance of getting a penny of that back.... it just didn't seem worth it.

I guess your right, but I guess I'm not one to roll over and follow the rest of the sheep, so to speak..

But then i guess theres a big jump from what i have now and to my next car... a RS4 or R8... so 50-70k spending 10k on the leon dont seem so sily i guess...

Well if i get 8-10k for the leon at the end of the 5 years, I'll be grateful...

If you had 4 grand sitting in the bank that you were not allowed to spend on your car, which of these are you likely to do?

a. Keep money for future use (house/car etc)
b. Invest money
c. Use money to clear *substancial* outstanding debt
d. Find something else to buy
e. Do nothing with it but be a miserable b... for all eternity for not being able to spend it on your car.

If you answer a-c then dont do it, if you answer d or e, then go for it.

As long as you can justify the expense and wont end up in financial difficulties as a result, then if cars are truely your love then at least spend/waste your money doing something you love.

My 2p :)

I just hacked off when people dont see worth it spending money on a diesel but cheer on a guy spending the same on a petrol?

It wasn't a diesel / petrol thing it was a cost Vs return thing i.e, a remap gets a 20% hike in performance and thereafter its the calculation of dimishing returns for power (CAI, Exhaust etc all big money for small returns)

So either go Big turbo etc and spending £6-£10k on BT mods

Or stick to some cheapish mod's and be happy with your perfromance

Or sell the Leon and spend £6-£10k on part ex for something quicker to start with

I believe we are discussing at the wrong stage of the mk1's life to be honest. Take 3 years ago when the LCR was 18k or so and the Cupra's 13-14k. It made sense to pump a couple of grand into the car to get it up to spec because you will get a car as fast or nearly as fast as an LCR for 2-3k cheaper if not more....

At this current stage in the MK1 there isn't much point in buy a cupra and spending 2k because LCR is much cheaper....

This is very true.... and something that's cropped up a few times recently. Sadly, people don't seem to be taking to the idea too quickly and seem to be stuck in the past. The difference in price between the LC and LCR is not as much as people think and is less than the cost of taking an LC to LCR standards.

Doesn't really apply here though, since we're talking about a diesel.

hey guy iv got a 150 fr leon and looking to upgrade the air filter mayb induction kit
any ideas???

Changing just your panel filter for a performance filter is ideal.

The P-Torque Stage 1 remap along with with Pipercross performance filter is £295.00 all in and includes dyno power runs with graph print outs.

You will see approx 185 - 190hp and 295lbs/ft torque from this :)

My remap was the best ever mod i've ever done to any car. Focus ST, yeah like to see him pull away from me on an M-way!!
