Hi All,

My FR is displaying that an oil change is required in 600 miles which will be around 9500 on the clock. I have owned the car since November and thought that this was a little early to be requiring a change but this is the first brand new car I have owned so maybe I am just being naïve.

I was also looking to replace the air filter whilst I do the oil change. Can anyone recommend a good aftermarket replacement as again I am not entirely knowledgeable in this but am aware that they can improve performance and fuel consumption.

Could anyone inform me whether this is 100% a requirement and whether the intervals will be greater going forward as it surely cant be every 9k!

Any help / advice would be greatly appreciated!

Leon

Mine is looking to be the same - oil service at 9,500 miles so I challenged the stealers about the service intervals being set wrong.

The warning will come up at 9500 miles to enable you to book it in in time for the 10,000 mile service.

I have always found it a con that the service tries to get you in 500 miles early for it.

OP, your car is set to 10k/yearly servicing so the reminder is correct. You can request that your car is set to variable/long life servicing schedule, but you will need to advise them of this pre oil change and make sure they fill with long life oil. If you only do low miles then you're probably best to leave it as is.

Deano, 500 miles may seem far off to you but I rack that up every few days so it barely gives me time to call the dealer let alone book an available slot... I normally call the dealer when I'm about 2k off. Mine's set to long life and still gets two services a year!

Whats long life oil then compared to not so long life oil..

Fully Synthetic as opposed to mineral I guess. It always bugs me though that garages usually charge £50 to £80 for this oil change whereas the same specification costs around £35 at Motor Factors and is a lot cheaper in 'bulk'. Nice little mark up.

I've got a mk2 Cupra and the service warning is set to either 9,300 or 9,400 miles (can't remember which). It's set this way to give you time to book the service, as Steve has said.

They're different specs. Long life supposedly won't degrade on extended service schedule.

Some garages only stock the long life so as to avoid confusion on the shop floor and for ease of ordering.

Don't be fooled you can not buy the needed oil for a round £35 it costs me £80 for a oil change at my local garage for my wifes Pug 5008 (recommended oil). Yes I to can have it done for £35 for any old oil.

That must be some seriously funky oil to be costing so much.

I ran my Ibiza 2.0TDi on TrippleQX fully synthetic VW507.0 compliant oil for 60k miles at 10k oil changes.

Never used a drop between services - ran sweet and I would say did fewer regens than the SEAT dealer used oils.

Generally get it for £33 for 5ltr over the counter at the local eurocarparts

I agree with Deano, I hope to supply said oil in Sept when Ibiza due service and the Leon the following month, currently a Castrol edge user, but the Leon drinks the stuff.

How many liters are you buying? You can buy the correct oil for £35 online or at the motor factors

I would rather pay for quality synth like Millers and have it changed every 6000 miles than do what VW say with long life oil rubbish.

id say the 10,000mile change is fine esp with the v good oil thats in these engines now.
Tractor Engine Oil Changes are stretching longer n longer but its the Quality of the OIL thats
partly driving this.
used to be 250hrs for most tractors engines.
Then it went to 400
Now its either 500 or 600 for some.
The Engines do lots of hrs with no trouble afaik.
5,000 hrs is like 100,000 miles on a car.

Just adding to this old post, interesting points made by all concerned.

I've had two Leon FR184 diesels, both serviced at the long life service intervals.
I bought the second one, which now has 94,000+ miles on the clock. All of the VAG 2.0 diesel engines I've driven have used oil between dealer services, maybe 1l in 6,000 miles. The BMW engines I've driven have never used a drop.
Oil quality, in my humble opinion, is key. Fully synthetic, suitable for DPF.
Out of interest, both FR184's never missed a beat, so that's 170,000 miles without fault.
Hard to believe the Leon diesel came last in the What car reliability survey?

My flavour of choice has always been Mobil 1.
I had an Escort RS Turbo MK1 many years ago now, the standard Ford oil used at sevice time just used to get burned off (oil cooled turbo on those MK 1's).
Switching to Mobil 1 stopped that nonesense and the car never used a drop between services after that.

Anyway, now the second FR184 is mine and I hardly do any of the milage I was doing, servicing regime is now my choice.
Due to the higher milage, I'm going to try Mobil 1 New Life 0W40.
It will be interesting to see how the car performs, I'm assuming the slightly thicker grade will help take up the wear clearances in certain areas.
Because it's such a good quality oil, there won't be any issues with sludge etc.
My only concern is the flow rate for this thicker oil.

Has anyone else taken this route?

Agree with avoiding these modern super long oil change intervals. Bought my FR 184 diesel at 32,000 miles and it gets Castrol Edge Titanium or Professional every 6,000 miles. It's now on 61,000 miles and barely uses any oil between changes and it scored 0.00 on the MOT smoke test a few days ago. Long change intervals are an incentive for fleet buyers to choose a car model because it reduces servicing costs.

Would be interesting to see the outcome on this as my Leon drinks quite a bit of oil from time to time

My previous car had the 1.5 K9K diesel engine. It was supposed to use 5W30 but I always ran it on 5W40 because that's what Nissan recommended and never had an issue. I think once your car starts drinking a bit of oil, going up a grade isn't a bad idea.

When I bought my 184 ST with 60,000 miles on it, it was on a LL regime (former company car). I was partly sold on the idea of reduced servicing costs etc. and only having it done every 20,000 miles which was once a year based on my mileage. It was soon explained to me by my mechanic that 20,000 miles is a long time for a TDI to have an oil change and I was only really doing 3000-5000 miles a year on the m/way.

I soon changed to a DIY oil and filter change every 5,000 miles and ditched the LL fantasy.

The car does seem to use a bit of oil - nothing drastic but certainly more than my Mk1 TDI - that never lost a drop but was pre-DPF.

I've always used 507.00 oil bit can't say that I've stuck to a certain brand. I'm currently using a big tub of Mannol oil due to the price:

I'd be interested to see if you guys using other brands helps with oil consumption.
