Hey Guys

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum, but I have a question.

I have a 02 Leon Cupra T, 1.8 20V T, and with the cold weather recently, the clutch pedal has been acting weirdly. When pressing it down and releasing, it tends to "stick" half way up the travel. Sometimes it will spring back on its own, sometimes you have to hook your toe underneath and pull it back.

Does this sound like a master cylinder problem to you? Or perhaps something more sinister? (hope not, this close to expense-mass).

If so, how much (roughly) is a new master cylinder, and how easy is it to change?

Hoping you can help shed some light on this...

could be the master or slave cylinder, i'm not sure which provides the return on the pedal. when mine went it completely failed and my clutch didn't return at all; so i guess yours may be leaking fluid or similar? not sure on prices, sorry.
 
common fault on these cars are the master cylinders do play up mate and they are a ball ache to change you have to take the complete clutch pedal out of the car to change it
 
Yes , I would say Master Cylinder
At least it may not be the slave cylinder as these are in the gearbox , and that is a nightmare and costly
Hope you get it sorted soon and cheaply

I've had two master cylinders and slave cylinder :(

Hope it's not the slave mate. they involve a lot of labour and If your clutch is still the original one you may as well get that done at the same time. ££££'s
 
My Leon Cupra has done the exact same thing a couple of times this winter and last winter but only in really cold conditions. I have had the gear stick freeze up aswell one or twice. Quickly sorts itself out though.
 
I had the same thing happen to me.
in the end the clutch pedal snapped and bent the master cylinder pushrod
so new pedal and master cylinder
fitted £180
 
I have had my second master cylinder done to date, there have apparantly been 6 revisions to the part number by VW, the one know recommended is a polo master cylinder which was fitted yesterday part number 6Q0721388D around £50 for the part.

I have just had done
Dual mass flywheel
Clutch kit
Slave cylinder
Master Cylinder

Its big money mate Circa £750 so hope its just your master!

My clutch had gone and the dual mass fly was shagged! 102k miles on the Leon know though.

One thing to note when the master goes completely you will loose the pedal entirely, it will go to the bulkhead and not move!!
 
I've also an issue with the clutch pedal on my 2002 Leon 1.6. The bitting point is very high up - and it judders on occasions.

I had the clutch replaced in 2006. Could this also be an issue with the Master Cylinder?
 
Is there any way of saying whether this problem is the Master Cylinder or slave cylinder? My pedal is not returning to its original position & i can't get a gear when the engine is switched on but there is no sign of any leaks & the fluid level is ok :confused:
 
i had the same problem then found myself stuck on a roundabout withno gears, i had a new clutch and flywheel fitted after it wasnt any of the cylinders so £700 later its fixed, i wasnt happy
 
Just been quoted £35 for the Master Cylinder and £27 for the Slave Cylinder from independant VW Parts shop - Can anyone tell me if this sounds about right? Seems a bit too cheap to me. Both prices are plus vat

Might be something simple

I had a similar problem and I'd only just got the car. In the end it was the pedal catching on the car mat. Might not be your problem but a lot cheaper to check that first.
 
I havent done this on my LCR but i did on my mk4 golf gti(both cylinders) and it was quite easy, parts were bosch items from GSF about £25 each so i thought it was worth a try as it will cost you that for a dealer to diagnose the fault. I found the Pedal mounted one worse but once your laying in the drivers footwell it all becomes clear and use a mirror to see the hidden botls. At the time i think i found a guide on ukmkivs.net or used a haynes (golf 98-02)

Right! This is similar if not exactly the same as what's been happening to mine since I got a new dmf clutch and slave fitted.

If its the slave I'll be slating the garage all round the NI car scene, cost a fortune to do it.

It's in for the dreaded MOT today so if there's a leak I'm expecting a big bill and a failure ticket
 
my pedal is cowering in the footwell also .. a hectic irate drive through town with no clutch mechanism was harrowing ... turns out on inspection that the master cylinder is leaking where it comes through the bulk head spraying fluids on my turbo and bulk head ... going to replace the whole pedal assembly and beef it up before i put it in with a heavy amount of weld to stop it snapping
