It should really be done in 4th to ensure you are getting as much engine load as possible

I know what you mean Will but we found a nice bit of road with a gradual incline. Unless you do logs on the motorway its just not practical to do them in 4th gear due to very excessive speed. Just my oppinium tho

completely agree with regards to safety/speed

Unfortunately the most accurate logs are gained from maximum load though.
