MAF sensor question

Afternoon all,
If an engine runs better (like, really well!) with a MAF removed - so obviously the MAF needs replacing, does this mean the engine will run EVEN BETTER with a new maf?

Reason is my car runs sweet as a nut without the maf plugged in but wondered if it would make much improvement with a new one in?

No, you don't need to replace a MAF unless it's faulty. You will gain nothing.

So the car running rough with it in and ten times better with it out doesn't mean it's faulty?

I think you've misread my post

The maf is faulty, and with it unplugged the car runs really good. So if I plugged in a new maf, would the car run even better than this?

Sorry, I misunderstood what your post was saying.

Yes, the car should run better with a new maf than no maf.

I give my MAF Sensor ans the connector plug a good clean in electrical cleaner fluid every year.

Only about £3-4 for a big can then just let it air dry

I also have this problem, which has been slowly getting worse over the last month. I unplugged my MAF yesterday and the car performed like a dream (as it should do), but the dash warning light is still on after I plugged the MAF back in.

Firstly is it normal for the light to remain on and secondly, how long is it safe to drive round with the MAF unplugged?

It is normal for the light to remain on if the MAF is faulty and you plug it in.

I had to drive around with it unplugged for about 70 miles with no problems but get it replaced asap.

I wouldn't buy off ebay mate, they don't last long. Buy original Bosch units only.

a few members have had issues with ebay mafs. id stay clear and as said get original. part number will be on the faulty maf and its easy to swop.. did mine in the dealer car park as its an exchange unit.

dont drive without maf plugged in for long.. it can kill the cat as youll overfuel

Just found a cheap bosch maf at https://secure.gsfcarparts.com/shop

They're selling them for £56 + VAT (£20 surcharge, refunded on supply of faulty maf)

On my car there is no power when switching between 1st & 2nd gear and when accelerating in 5th & 6th the car starts to vibrate. When I unplugged the maf these problems disappeared and the car performed like a dream.

Problem solved.

Having located a cheap replacement MAF I thought I'd better find out how easy it was to remove the old one before I paid for a new one. When I took the old one off I discovered that one end of the hosing wasn't connected on properly and the rubber seal inside also wasn't aligned properly.

Having fixed these my car now runs like a dream, as it should do, so its worth checking before buying a new one and as I know nothing about cars, if I can fix this then anyone should be able to.

I might seem dim but where is it and is it reasonably assesable for a diy renovation /exchange.?
