So a while ago I wanted to see if I could update my car's map data and found this forum thread:

Updating the inbuilt Mib2 Satnav / Mib2 tricks and Mib1

Downloaded the maps from there, followed the procedure and it worked. But after installing it on the SD card I noticed it was a map that doesn't include Germany.
Thought it would be nice to see actual coverage of a downloaded map. And I also wanted to try out if opencode was any good at the same time.

Anyway, I ended up having opencode create an actually usable map coverage tool (with some instruction from me) for the PC which can also update your SD card.
Used it on my own car and i worked fine.

Here's the link if anyone's interested.

*** Of course, before you try any updates, backup your sd card first! ***

Possibly out grew from when the all European maps out grew the 16gb card. You got zones then people wanted different zones to the ones grouped up. You could always buy the 32gb card and put all of Europe on it. I see Pcbbc gets a mension. The Audi owner guy that enabled the Inrix Traffic reports on a mib2 standard when Trafficmaster pulled out... although Inrix have stopped broadcasting their reports over TMC now. A band of merry men of software engineers that understand the geo information files used in the system.

Mib2 standard is amenable to changing the file contents. Mib2 high and what goes after since the files are signed so in principle there was no fiddling with them. Unfortunately Vag left a backdoor open which was the poi import which didn't require signed files so firmware files could be reorganised, check sums adjusted and anything could be imported into these units. The AIO SW uses this technique and the mib2 SW libraries are littered with modified SW. This caused Vag to have kittens and they contracted an enforcement company to go after platforms that hosted the files. Hence why those platforms come and go.

With connected cars software adjustment has become an international no no and foreign actors and hackers could close down transport systems so the days of modding the cars operations is getting more limited. Vcds / Obdeleven etc requiring to handshake with Vag servers and infotainment access locked out in newer cars. Only registered Vag software with licences used by dealers and retrofitters getting access. SFD tightened up into SFD2. So the good times are over first on SFD1 that ran from 2020-25 and SFD2 to present. The pre 2020 models have unlimited ability to customise beyond that's restricted by international mandate. Well by those that signed it.
