mine doesnt miss fire per say, but when running at elevated rpm on a cold start theres a definate lumpiness in the idle, but as soon as the sai winds down and the revs drop she purrs like a kitten

possibly just one of the perks of the car?

Surely a Bosch recon is done by Bosch hence Bosch recon, and not some honkey tonk recon.

Not necessarily, it just means its a Bosch MAF that's been reconditioned to Bosch specs, doesn't mean its done by Bosch. Just got to read the fine print on some, I know ECP ones are meant to be Bosch repaired, but it might just be a Bosch authorised repairer that does them.
Either way, I don't know why but when it comes to MAFs I've found dealer ones are always the ones to go for, not just for VAG cars but for the Mercs I work with and a load of other cars I've worked on.

You tried cleaning the throttle body and do a reset on VAGCOM? I did so on my car a while ago whilst I was servicing it and it certainly smoothed out the throttle response.

Mine did this for ages, When I serviced it I replaced the plugs and gave the throttle body a clean and a reset with vagcom, it hasn't done it since so one of those must have cured it. I would be tempted to say plugs as the throttle body wasn't really in need of a clean.
