Here we go again, except this time under a cloud of delusion and above average regrets ... I bought this on a whim, I wanted another project which came at a right time and price but my excitement clouded my initial thoughts and expectations.

So here she is! My MK1 Cupra R ...

Bought from a friend, it had sat garaged without an MOT for at least 6 months, it definitely had issues but to what extent was completely overlooked and spat out by turbo noises.

So far:
Uniroyal Rainsports all round
Replacement rear door lock
Coolant flush
T-belt and water pump
All filters, fluids and plugs
Gear oil

Next:
Full silicone hose kit
Lower engine mount
NS engine mount
Yet another door lock
Shocks, top mounts and lowering springs.

Undecided on polyflex, fitting them on the starlet created so much unnecessary vibration for couple races a year, not sure if it's worth affecting the daily drive for to be honest.

Also discovered the gearbox is well ... screaming so will have to get that done, might consider LSD and clutch if the price is right whilst it's out in pieces, at least I'll know its good.

Apart from said issues, she's a beaut! Suits my attitude for sure.

Looks so nice in red I forget how nice red cars look when they are nice and shiny and clean fair play. I would honestly love a mk1 if I had the time to do a light resto on one but I’ve got too many unfinished projects at the mo and not enough motivation to spread between them.

It looks a lot cleaner in pictures, lacquers completely gone in some places I've toyed with the idea of wrapping it but I can't be arsed, it'll only get dinked in a car park I just want to drive the bloody thing.

Just a pointless update, whilst retrieving the numbers from my box for the rebuild it became apparent I actually have a diesel gearbox 🤔 is this a thing? I've never heard or seen this before, I'm assuming the torque tolerances were considered and favoured during the decision making process but has anyone else done this?

If it has the a TDI gearbox then the gear ratios will be longer than the petrol equivalent.
Great for motorway runs and economy but not exactly ideal for a higher revving petrol engine with less torque than a derv unless you plan to run a huge turbo.

Which TDI box is it? Also, may want to log speeds at specific rpm. The reason I say is some TDI boxes get cog swapped (think it's the final drive ratios) for drag racing and/or turbo R32 purposes

Its the vag 6 speed, i also got it with a short shifter but that's very interesting maybe that's why, or at least that was part of the plan.

They will all be 02M gearboxes but what you want to find out is which code it is by checking the milled flat section just behind the shifter arm.

Now I'm confused as FZL is a 1.8T TT Quattro gearbox. Does it have a transfer box bolted to it?

You and me both, I'm just going off what the parts guys told me based on all the codes I found around the box. It will be being opened in a week or so for refurb.

The ratio codes are on top near the shift tower, that's just a casing part number.

So inside the car?

Sorry I'm not a mechanic by any means, I can find my way around in layman's terms but shifter arm to me would suggest the stick itself?

I didn’t know those were ratio codes interesting as I’ve been trying to find the ratios for my box with the wavtrac as it doesn’t feel the same as the stock 6speed that’s in the car currently.
