ive seen alot of engine bays without it , ive only seen a hand full with it.
maybie its a sort of breather as mines a very early model so it may have bin done away with in later engines due to it being a waste of time or something ........ im jus guessing

I have that pipe on mine, 2002 AUQ engine - think it's a top hose for one of the breathers.
I've discovered something though with the N112/SAI bypass - if your car has a vaccuum leak in the breathers somewhere the engine will naturally start to run rich because the car will be adjusting its mixture to cope. When it does this it can cause the engine to start throwing warning lights on overrun; the SAI system is trying to kick in to correct the corrected fuel map and has no effect.
This is why I think a lot of people are seeing twitchy cars post SAI removal - if they've got a vaccuum leak it's screwing with the fuel map and the SAI system is trying to kick in to tone it down a bit.
I shut down all the breathers on my car so the intake was leak free and the breathers were just dumping to air; the check engine light just went away and didn't come back till I replaced the breathers. Also I can't hear the SAI pump kicking in any more.

i am listening to you lee69 lol and ive done what you suggested and its running fine but no matter what, you always get contradicting advise 
Aye, it's a breather but nothing connected to it (for some reason) so blank it off as you don't want un-metered air going in after the MAF.
job done now for a engine bay clean up , some trick bits off flee bay (shud be here today ![[:@]](/forums/styles/seatcupra/oldforumsmileys/furious.gif "Furious [:@]")

You need to get some logging done with vag com, then let the people who can read them let you know.
