Right update. A diesel daily has been found in the shape of a Toledo TDI so the Ibiza will be going off the road and getting an overhaul starting in 13 days.

Plans are pretty big at this point, I'm going to get a snag list together and post it up but it'll probably take a while to compile. Its not going to be nut and bolt but as good as it needs to be to get the car show room fresh. There's no time frame to work to, it'll take as long as it takes and will probably be done in phases.

At this point its probably not going to be at any shows this year as the cost of working on the car and taxing it and insuring it short term are going to stop that, unless I can find a way of tranporting it there such as a trailor.

The plan is to take the car completely back to stock so its 100% original, but once I've got all my ideas together I'll post up the plan of action. Needless to say once I get below the surface onto the mechanicals there are going to lots of questions asked!

UPDATE!!!!

The car is technically for sale, although in all honesty I'm not really trying to sell it as something mentally won't let me. So its been sat for the last few months in the garage and being as the weather is all nice and I had a couple of hours to spare today I thought I'd make an effort and start cleaning up the engine bay.

As can be seen very dirty from my days rallying down country lanes - which incidentally I miss hugely!

Sound proof mat thing was terrible

After a going over with the dyson

Then a going over with a scrubbing brush and the vax

This is where I got up to

DSC00056.jpg

I have no idea how it all goes back, but thats half the fun!

Getting a little wanted list together too, so far it consists of:

  • Drivers side glovebox
  • Passenger side internal handle surround
  • Rubber cushion things that sit on the wings under the bonnet
  • Centre silencer
  • Rear Silencer
  • Passenger side front wing

There will be more to come ;)

Where I left the engine bay last week

DSC00074.jpg

Got hold of these this weekend

DSC00073.jpg

Some scrubbing later

DSC00075.jpg

Intake parts

DSC00076.jpg

Quick check of the timing belt, changed near 40k ago - seems fine

DSC00077.jpg

Noticed something on the timing belt cover

DSC00079.jpg

West and East Germany became one long before my car was built - how old is the cover? Something from a MKII Golf parts bin?

I'm getting to the point where I'm going to have to take decisions. I've realised to get the engine bay much cleaner the front end is going to have come off - and thats new territory to me. So do I strip down and carry on slowly making sure not to bugger up or do I just do the best I can with the front end on?

One things for sure at £6.00 a litre for engine degreaser I am going to need to find cheaper and more plentiful sources!

Had another couple of hours on her today getting the front end off. It was all going pretty well until i got to the bumper. The heads on the screws through the wheel arch liners had rused so I had to drill them out, the problem being they got so hot that the arch liners melted through around the screw! So its a new pair of arch liners or a bodge, but as I want to do this properly its going to be new arch liners and at £25 each for some recycled plastic its money I could of put elsewhere.

So I need to add a few more things to my shopping list, most of them being replacement screws for rusted items. I know one thing though, a bad day in the garage is far better than a good day at work!

  • New passenger side internal handle surround fitted (I have this too)

Things I want to get done:

Today being a nice day I got down to some prep and painting. Paintings not really my kind of thing in all honesty I hate the slow prep times, I'm more of an instant results kind of guy.

New rear bumper to replace my holed one with parking sensors, I rescued it from a GTi 16v destined for the scrap heap.

DSC00159.jpg

Pretty good condition really apart from the odd chip and scratch

DSC00161.jpg

DSC00162.jpg

Filled this scratch last night in preparation

DSC00163.jpg

Cracked on with the wet and dry getting the flaws out of the paint

DSC00165.jpg

DSC00167.jpg

Ended up like this

DSC00168.jpg

Got some Holts clear plastic primer, seems ok although the aerosol ran out of steam at 2/3's used

DSC00171.jpg

DSC00169.jpg

Decided to spray filler primer on the area's that were back to black plastic and then carried on until the can was gone

DSC00173.jpg

DSC00175.jpg

Rub down, top coat and lacquer next week all being well :)
