Morning all

Today sees the end of my eco run; it started off at the start of the week with the fuel uncertainty, and after a couple of good days I thought I'd carry on and see if I could beat my previous record.

Well today I have covered 671 miles on one tank (roughly 5% of which is Morrisson's Vegetable Oil :D ) plus whatever handful of miles it'll be to the fuel station at lunchtime.

If it hadn't for the motorway trips to Warwick on Saturday and Silverstone on Sunday, I'd fairly sure I'd have broken 700....

Has anyone else beaten 671 in a Mk4 Ibiza ? (Not Leons or any other model as they have different size tanks)

Looking forward to booting it tonight and clearing the collections of soot from the exhaust, must wait until a suitable "victim" is behind...!

Yeah I normally get around 500 to a tank, so that sounds right.

It's hard work getting to 671 though !

Dude how did you manage it? I've been driving like a granny and i'm getting about 400miles a tank. are u using ultimate diesel or putting some fancy additive in the tank? I really don't think i could see that amount of miles from one tank.

Beats me Muddy  , 605 my best so far on Ultimate. McNab you need some long motorway journeys. Short stop start stuff won't do you any favours :(

Better still, you need journeys on motorways or dual-carriageways with a 40 or 50 speed limit (but free-flowing traffic obviously). Even if you stick to the 70 limit on the motorway, you still pay for that in poorer fuel economy compared to driving at a slower speed. [*]

Out of interest, does anyone know what the optimum speed (and gear) is for the PD engines? I'm getting the impression that these engines give phenomenal economy at about 30 in 4th gear. I'm always surprised how little difference it makes to your overall mpg when you get stuck in some slow-ish traffic.

[*] Sorry - I lapsed into "stating-the-obvious" mode then. :)

Yep, steady 40-50mph cruising gets the best results. Steady 70-80 motorway cruising is pretty good but won't win you the eco-challenge :D I've done at a guess 300 motorway miles in that tankful; if I'd not done those and stuck to my normal work route I would easily have gone past 700.

I must add that I never get near that kind of range from a tank during normal driving, it's been very hard work to get those figures.

McNab - no I haven't been using any special fuels, just normal BP with the remnants of my Morrissons veggy oil (which I don't think has made any difference btw).

Normally average about 230-240 miles from a full tank. Seem to be filling up every 4 days at the moment.

I take it you've got the petrol cupra then??

I used to get about 240 to a tank before i started to vent it, now i'm heading for 300 miles per tank!! woo hoo!!

Dont forget that muddyboots car (and mine) are both pretty high milers.. i can reguarly see over 550miles from a tank, without really taking care on economy.. thats with revo too.

Mine lasts me about week as well, thats home and back from work (about 25 miles round trip) then to see the gf which is about 120 mile round trip, then the rest i'm assuming is just driving around which would account for about 50.

best ever is 345 miles form one tank ( thats the benfits of cruise control) and average is 250-260 miles per tank, which ain't bad really.

Noticed a very slight bit more under hard acceleration, but mine hardly smokes anyway.

I got 330-odd miles from a full tank until the beeper came on today going from Buckingham to Abington Services on the M74. It beeped as I entered the filling station there infact. That's not bad going for me.

You mean the diesels get better as they get older? That's great - I'm already pretty pleased with mine with 8.5k on the clock. :)

yep they do, they tend to stabalise after about 40k or so, keeping the best mpg till high into the mileage 200k or so. With only 8.5k on yours its still tight, you will notice a difference after 10k and then 20 and so on.
