mot rules & eml woes

hello,
reading a thread by lee69 in the general off topic area my car will now fail its mot due to new rules

car was sluggish when i bought and lots of black smoke under any acceleration.
was advised to clean egr, which i did. No smoke and more poke.
As it was so clogged it had actually broken the ASV! so this is no more. I have done nothing else to the car, but have the resultant eml on. new egr valve has been put in place with working ASV.

With eml car will fail mot
no mot means cannot sell car as is worthless, and looking to sell early next year.

So,
How do i clear the eml? without expensive remap so car will a) pass mot b) be saleable

Vosa are proposing alot of new rules that are yet to be approved by the government warning light being one.

Personally I'd buy a cheap code reader of eBay (like and autel VAG405) for about £50 and knock the light off just before the test takes place as it's unlikely to come on during the test.

You then usually get around 120 miles before it returns - this is time it takes for the OBD cycle to take place.

I think a lot of the new rules will be dependent on the age of the car too, like how some get cheap road tax etc for being super efficient and clean. Older cars have higher limits for the exhaust gases etc, cars without cats and what have you. You might be worrying about nothing so far. Don't know why your light is on though, surely if it was the egr or asv it should've gone away by now, maybe there's something else lurking about which you could find out with a scan. I highly recommend that autel vag 405 too, great piece of kit and I keep mine in the car at all times.

Yeh but he said he replaced it, the egr and the asv but the light is still on.


As for the rules, I wish we weren't part of the european union with all these daft ideas they keep coming away with.

thanks for thoughts guys.

i have android phone and use torque app to clear once a week and make sure it is only fault logged.
i can clear just before the test yes, but isn't that negating fact i should have no light?

ideally would like light removed proper, and from i understand a remap is the best way to do this but that means a new clutch as well if done properly! cannot afford this.

it has a new egr inplace with new 'O'rings
even had an mot at seat in crewe and they said your lights on. had work done by vw shrewsbury and again, they just mention it.

you'd have thought if bad would try and flog me some work to rectify!

You don't need a full on remap to map out the light for egr. The eml light will function as normal, but overlook the egr.

sorry volvic, not sure i understand you.

are you saying i don't need a remap from revo, p-torque et al to remove the egr function, and stop the light for ever?
be nice if can, as i want it cleared for good.

When you say remap above, I think you're saying a £250+ performance remap which includes mapping the egr light out.
I had the egr delete on my Leon before I sold it, jabba mapped the light out at the same time as putting a generic map on. They must be able to map the light out regardless of the state of tune at a much lower price!
As for mot changes, its all just scaremongering. Engine check lights don't always mean there's a problem. Our old car did over 160k with the engine light on for most of its life. Ran beautifully.

the old black tape trick lol !!!!

i need my wheel speed sensor changed quick then as that often throws the abs traction lights on

cant you take the mot before its actually changed rules , it might be a few months before expiry but least its less headwork for you to sell it as you can show the potential buy the error code for them to know the problem

you can have your car mot tested any time.

i thought you could only take an mot a certain time frame before the next one is due?

you can take it a month before its due to keep its annual renewal

but if you go in and have one it would over ride it

i knew a guy from work who bought a car from a sales place , who had a fresh mot on it at sale

he drove it around and thought this cars dangerous , took it to another garage for an mot and it failed on loads of stuff

just done some searching on the new mots, hope they are not all true , eu be pi$$ing on everyones parades other wise

Stricter MOT test from 2012
Starting in January 2012 a new stricter MOT will be introduced as the EU brings in a minimum standard of vehicle testing across all member States.

The VOSA internal newsletter MattersOf Testing contains an interesting piece on the future.

A few things stand out.

Britain has been testing vehicles under the MOT scheme for 50 years now.

Last year, the European Directive covering the MOT test was updated and revised by a modern version called 2009/40/ EC.

This was then updated by 2010/48/EU, which was ratified on 5 July this year

The changes bring the requirements for car and commercial tests closer together with approximately 50 new testable items to be added.

VOSA are currently working with MOT testers to try to ensure that the new test is cost neutral, in other words no fee increase. Also they are working with testers to find the most efficient way of checking the new items.

Implicationsfor modified vehicles

New areas specifically affecting modified cars include:

HID headlamps and bulb incompatibility,

Tinted windows

Wiring condition and, possibly of greater concern

Mudguards(wings), spray suppression devices.

Visual inspection

(a)Missing,loose or badly corroded

(b)Insufficient clearance to road wheel

(c) Not inaccordance with the requirements.

Engine performance:

(a) Control unit illegally modified.

(b) Illegal engine modifications.

Currently we do not have a list of illegal engine tuning parts in this country but the EC is looking at restrictions across the board, particularly as OEM are pressing against tuning of their ECU software, maintaining that it is their property, regardless of the vehicles sale.

Obviouslyany ban on tuning would negatively affect not only our hobby but also a vast range of aftermarket suppliers who still seem to be ignoring the possible consequences of any new legislation.

After liasingwith ETO (European Tuners Organisation) there is every possibility that any initial laws will be aimed at cars which use an 'Emissions' based tax system.

As the system is based also on economy it may be that wider wheels,increasing rolling resistance and other mods that affect weight or aerodynamics fall foul of the regulations

We need to raise awareness of this legislation, so please ask any supplier you speak with if they are aware of the issue and what action they are taking.
