right ok, understand now. thanks pete.
well i have spoted a lush 600w amp which will do plenty for me.
its retail is 400ish, it one year old and its been sold for 50quid
not saying where cos any one who knew ould buy it, so im guna get my hands on that.
a mate of mine ran two kappa 12.1s off it and bridged it to 1ohms.
that killed the subs eventually like, but shows thqat it can hack my single sub.
pete can you explain what relevance ohms has to rms, and peak power?
thanks alot i want to learn this stuff
12.1s can ONLY run 4ohms
simple terms?
ohms=petrol (very specific petrol)
ok lets take for example your car only runs on 1specific type of petrol and if you put the wrong one in your car you might of aswell filled the tank with mustard.
8ohms - 90ron normal boggo tescos unleaded
4 ohms = 95 less restricteve and runs better
2 ohms = Super unleaded ie 100ron
1ohms = rocket fuel.
the smaller the number, the power increase is about 2x(IIRC) is 300W-RMS @8ohms= 600W-RMS on 4, BUT thats only if everything is A)wired correctly, B)compatible.
subs can only run "normally" @ a single Ohm rating ie if i have a kappa it will run at 4 ohms, if i put it on a 1ohm amp its like quadrupling the power, and you will end up melting the voice coil inside it.
BUT some subs have 2 voice coils like my type r
please note the 4 speaker wire terminals
these are a bit more complicated BUT its easy when you think bout it. OK so I have a sub with 2 voice coils @4 ohms each (that means both voice coils are 4 ohms)
good so far yes?
heres the tricky bit,
When you have 2 voice coils on 1 sub you have to wire them together either in serial OR in paralel
the difference between the two means that 1 way you half the ohms and 1 way you double it.
Option 1 (parallel) = 2 ohm load
Voice coils wired in parallel
Recommended Amplifier: Stable at 2 or 1 ohm mono
Option 2 (series) = 8 ohm load
Voice coils wired in series
Recommended Amplifier: Stable at 4, 2, or 1 ohm mono
the way that type R above is wired is @2ohms.
simples?
so in simple terms IF you run that Kappa @ 1 ohm you will melt it, OR you buy a sub that's compatible with the amp and vice versa.
id recommend a 12" type R if you have 600W-RMS @2ohms available
