My LCR 225 Test Drive Verdict

Hey folks, I'm new to this forum and this is my first post :D

I currently have a Honda Civic Type-R (stop boooing lol) and am hopefully getting rid of it for an LCR 225. Well I went for a test drive at the weekend and here is my verdict :)

My test drive was of a Leon Cupra R 225bhp model, 54 plate with about 6,000 miles.

I went in with an open mind not knowing really what to expect but I can safely say that I was very impressed!

Lookswise I think this car is nicely balanced; not in your face (unless it's a yellow one ) but distinguished enough to make it stand out a bit. The 18's, oval tail pipe and Brembo's really work nicely I think. Even with 4 doors the car still looks sporty and, although I prefer to have 3 doors, this factor would ceratinly not stop me from getting the LCR.

Okay...inside I thought is nice, everything is pretty much black with the odd bit of red detailing; the streering wheel has a nice feel and there is a red line of stitching in the dead top centre which is another subtle but nice sporty touch. The particular model that I took out had the standard LCR front seats, as opposed to the Recaros which are an optional factory extra. They still offered good support however (not quite as much as the CTR) and the material is nice and hard wearing. My only gripe would be that the dash looks dated compared to newer cars and there was the odd rattle here and there but nothing too major to detract from the driving experience.

Ok enough of the inside and onto the actual test drive itself. My Dad and the salesman were in the car so 3 people in all. It should be noted that I've not driven a petrol engine turbo before, only turbo diesels. We drove through the town where the dealership is based and the first thing I noticed was that the throttle felt very nice indeed and the gearbox, although not as slick as the CTR, still felt really nice and sure footed - gears felt softer to engage which I actually prefer. Exiting the town, we got out onto a slip road which joins a piece of motorway so a great opportunity to see what it could do....wow :D I took it to just before the redline in 3rd and it really did put a smile on my face...3rd gear is very long and the power delivery is very smooth and progresses nicely throughout the range...makes you wonder what a Revo'd one must feel like Obviosuly it's a lot easier to drive quick than the CTR and whilst it doesn't keep you on your toes as much, that's not always a bad thing IMO; the LCR still offers a big grin factor and I felt rewarded! Sadly there wasn't many chances to throw the cars into bends at great pace but overall it felt nicely placed on the road; to be honest I prefer straightline speed on big open roads and long gentle sweeping bends rather than the twisties but that's just me, we all have different things that we want from cars.

So I shall have a try of the Megane 225 in the week and see how it compares...all I'll say is that it has quite an act to follow

Russ

Nice one Russ...nice to see a sensible appraisal of a car and that you seem to know what to look for when testdriving...
The car will ultimately not match the outright pace of the CTR around a track....Tiff Needel was 1 sec shy of a CTR in a group test he did around Angelsy for TV.
However on the open road and for overtaking the easier to find power will make up for any slight defficiency..and if you have a feel for cars which it sounds as though you do you will learn that there is a more measured technique of cornering that sees the Cupra R easily able to keep up by balanced use of the throttle round bends and careful steering.
The little it loses round corners can then be easily made up on the straight..:)

A friend recently test drove a 225LCR, I went along for the ride and kept quiet.

Unfortunately, he had only ever driven my car and was slightly disapointed by the standard 225LCR he found it slower (lacking the punch of revo),didn't like the gear change (I have a short shifter) and didn't like the amount of roll.

So interestingly he has decided to give the Civic Type R a try, personally I think it's a good ida as it's the one car that stacks up against the LCR in purchase cost and performance....

I'll be interested to see how he compares the Civic to the LCR, I'll try and persuade him to come and give some feedback the other way on here.

Glad you enjoyed the LCR

I never took a CTR for a test drive, our local Honda dealer had had one written off during a test drice and their insurance company had set a minimum age of 25 for CTR and S2000 test drives!!!

A real problem for them as a lot of CTR driver are going to be under 25!! As I understand it the CTR suffers from a lot of road noise etc to the extent that driving on the motorways can become very tedious, is that true?

Russ, from what I've read about the standard Megane 225 you'll not be too impressed, you have to go for the Cup/Trophy version I believe!

Finally, although it was a nicely written post, your describing the interior of the LCR to LCR owners did make me smile!!!!! ;)

Just one last though before I go and this is something I'd suggest to all people looking for a 'hot hatch' at the moment you should, pending the reviews, consider selling you wife/girlfriend, kids, house, parents and soul and get the money together for a BMW 130:

RWD, 50:50 weight distribution, 260BHP 0-60 in 6.2!!!!!!!!!!

Ugly and very expensive when specced up.

Yeah I and was going to say "How much for one of those 130's?"

Hardly in the same price league as the CTR and LCR is it?

Anyway nice write up and if you can wait and want a 3dr looking car buy the New Leon! :hide:

Hope you can give a little review of the Megane as well - only seen a few on the road and did try to look at one but I think seeing my car the sales guy was not too impressed to carry on talking - shame that attitudes of people can let the car down really.

Happy hunting with the LCR and if you need any advice then you'll find lots on here.

Having owned both a CTR and LCR225 i can say that i prefered the CTR...the LCR got boring after 6 months. Its great for the 5 door aspect and looks pretty subtle but the drive became a bit 'uninteresting' after a short while for me.
Each to their own, CTR is a bit common though now for my own preferences hence why i now own a Focus RS...3 door, limited numbers and should hold its value pretty well for the next 1-2 years hopefully, its also a better car to drive than the CTR and LCR.

All IMO....take a test drive of them all and then make a decision.

i test drove a CTR a few weeks back, and its a great hack about car, loads of fun on the twistys, and the gearbox is great.

However as an every day car, ive chosen not to get one as the road noice is high, and the interior isnt as well made as the german stuff (well the leon is virtually german) also, as i was looking at the £8/£9K bracket, the CTR's i could afford had about 60,000mls on the clock, after alot of research they start getting problems with the clutch and gearbox about then, so another reason i didnt get one.

So im currently looking for a test drive in a Cupra, sadly cannot afford the R otherwise it would be a dun deal as love the look of the LCR. classey, understated and sporty, just the way i like it. not in your face like the CTR, which is not a classey car. :)

Road noise is only high due to the standard RE040 tyres...change to a different brand and it makes a massive difference.
Not heard of these 60k gearbox/clutch problems....new one on me i'm afraid.
After living with the CTR and LCR for 12 months+ i found the interior quality to be much of a muchness between them personally.

Excellent choice. Welcome on board. I take it the Megane 225 didn't compare. Didn't think it would to be honest.

I took my mate's Megane 225 for a spin and much preferred the 'feel' of the LCR, not much in it performance wise :)

By the way does anyone know if the LCR has a drive by wire throttle?
