i'm about to book an oil change with NT as its cheaper to get them to change the oil/filter than it is for me to buy the oil myself. at the checkout they offer to dispose of my old oil at a cost, and also an engine flush which is £8

is it worth doing? heres the description

Engine Flush is specifically formulated to combat modern motoring issues caused by the adverse affect of extended oil drain periods.

During the long interval between oil changes, crankcase acids are produced. If left within the system when the oil is changed, these acids immediately go to work breaking down the new oil leading to the creation of lacquers and varnishes which are deposited on the oil system components such as Hydraulic Valve Lifters, Variable Valve Timing Systems and Piston Rings. These components work within very tight tolerances and any sticking due to the deposits in the oil system results in inefficient operation of the system and poor driveability.

The engine flush National Tyres and Autocare provides cleans sludge, dirt, varnish and other contaminants from the engine, whilst cleaning the Valves, Hydraulic Lifters and other oil system components. By having an engine flush on your vehicle prior to an oil and filter change it helps to improve the engine performance and keeps new oil cleaner for longer."

I am no expert but from all the stuff i have read they don't seem to be worth it.

Have a read of this thread it agrees with a lot of views I have seen across many sites.

What seems to win (and is common sense) is regular on time oil changes.

i saw a comment from a guy who said he uses cheap mineral oil for 10 miles and then flushes that out and replaces it with proper oil. have any of you guys tried that?

i just fell into a rabbit hole of threads on pistonheads about flushin engines. probably for the best then since the cars into double digits now

There used to be a guy who had an old Lotus and what he did was go to Kwick Fit get them to change the oil, drive around until oil was fully up to heat go back and have another oil change.

My worry is that on Older engines you may move stuff that you don't want moved. and suddenly have bigger problems.

Generally my view (and I am no expert) is that you dont need this just keep changing oil at regular intervals and if you work the engine very hard for a long time (eg have you dont a load of track days one after the other) then change sooner - least that is what I do.

Not a fan of using an engine flush, you can loosen crap in oil ways that doesn't come out when you drain the oil or indeed after the change, ok, it should be caught in the filter but do want to take the chance. Regular oil changes using quality oil should be enough?

Agree with both of the above comments. Just throw the extra cash from the oil flush into a tin and put it towards having an oil change a couple of months earlier than scheduled and your engine will thank you!

Added to all the above, it's impossible to remove all the oil flush, without filling with oil, running and draining so your have some left mixed in with your nice fresh oil, and I suspect NT won't drain your oil for long either..
