I know some will want it as another excuse for "look at what my car can do" but some manufacturers also enable it for diagnostic purposes - for example on my old Mk2 Clio if you held in button on the indicator stalk and turned the ignition on it would go in to a diagnostics mode on the dash cluster to check everything was working as it should.

As we are seemingly choosing to use the noble gases as a metaphor, I have little patience or time for oxygen thieves!

Just for the the avoidance of doubt, being one of the sites owners and admins, I can win every argument if I choose to.

My point being I pride myself on being quite restrained and don't rise easily to provocation of folks who probably should know a little better.

To use another metaphor, probably not the best idea to keep prodding the wasp nest with a pointy stick. ;)

Reasons for me wanting needle sweep:

1.I am a nerdy geeky person at heart, thats why I have the torque app on my phone and a bluetooth ODB2 reader.

2. Its free to enable

3. You will always be safe in the knowledge you don't have sticky/broken needles. A problem that I admit is almost completely irradiated in new cars to my knowledge but still not an impossibility.

There are loads of things we each do to our cars that are often deemed useless/pointless to others, to name a few:

Why do you need all that power when you can't legally go over 70mph on the roads?

Why do you put so much effort into cleaning your car when as soon as you drive down the road its dirty again?

Why lower your car when there are speed bumps everywhere?

And so on.

At the end of the day each to their own.

Quick OT.

Haven't tried Torque on my Mk3 yet - does it connect ok? I know the obd protocol is generic but I have heard that the Mk3 doesn't use CANBUS but yet another protocol (aside from VAGCOM) so I'm curious as to how functional it is.

It works absolutely fine with mine. Throttle position always shows 80%+ for some reason but everything else is perfect.

Reassuring to hear, thanks. TP used to show 90+ on my old TDI. I think it is because diesels are free-breathers and don't have a butterfly valve controlling air intake per-se.

Any who, back On Topic.

I'll be getting sweep on mine at some point. Purely for willy-waving.

Having settled down again after some uncontrolled giggling at the notion of you being restrained, please let me clarify (and I won't comment on this again, so you do get an opportunity to have that so-desired final word):

I am not in any way questionning people's desires to do basically anything to their cars, even if "useless". H*ll, I'm doing plenty of that myself. Like sticking truly useless badges of poor taste to my rides (hated by most, which I can understand that some of those people urgently need to let me know every now and then), or buying all-too-fancy wheels (not equally controversial, it seems, but still....).

I'm just saying that I spent 1,5 years in a Golf R thinking there was some kind of point that I was completely missing with VW themselves featuring "needle sweep" in this and some other models. Now that a thread appeared here, I saw an opportunity to finally have this explained. I thought that maybe it might serve as back-up to warning lights for diagnosis check verification, or something like that. But it now seems people want to do this strictly for enjoyment, and that needle sweep is indeed useless for any other purpose. And if people think that's cool, then I certainly get why they're still doing it.

BTW, I'll post an image of my new SC when I'm done pimping it with badges and all, for you and everyone else to see that this Roger over here certainly keeps all darts in check.

;)

It must be due to the long dark nights.

Your providing far too much entertainment for me to be offended. ;)

Camera

Hi i got needle sweep enabled today in a HIFI garage, specialized in VAG cars

I also got OPS enabled (i dont have front parking sensors so it was disabled before)

The guy there said he was working on the park cam system too, he said he managed to connect the cam and got some progress on the software but it only sends a black empty screen he says
I ordered a camera from kufatec, when it turned up its a generic camera so I sent it back and have ordered the same camera from somewhere else at 1/5 of the price. I do have the wiring and coding info if needed :)

I've also adapted the behavior of the folding mirrors like this and also set the climate control system to show the fan speed while in Auto mode like this

There are a few others that may just be poor translations, I'd love to know what "Driving School Mode" is, and there is also a guide on changing the interior lighting to always be red, which is tempting.
