Just to add to this thread, I have a 54 plate LCR with 70K on the clock.

Overall my gearbox is good(ish). It has no whining whatsoever, but has always been a bit clunky changing gear, especially 1st - 2nd, even when fully warmed up after a long (100+ mile) run.

Ive changed the gearbox oil for fresh OE Seat stuff
Ive changed the gearbox cable bushes for the aluminium ones.
Ive reset the cables to the linkages.
Finally I did the gearbox shim mod.

Its still no better.

I guess its something I'm just going to have to live with, but it does ruin the driving experience when you've got to nurse it into gear sometimes.

There was still a small amount of back/forwards play on the bearing after the shim was installed, I wonder if its worth putting another additional shim in...?

Have you tried replacing the plastic ball housing/bearing at the base of the gearstick? I forget the part no. now but a quick search would get it.

I have a 55reg Leon fr TDI. Noise only in fifth gear, like a snitch changing into the gear then a whine whilst the accelerator is off??? Is this the shim? And also when I rang seat with your part number they said its a big washer? Is this right? Would really appreciate some advice.

Did mine last week. The circlip/snapring can be a bit fiddly to get out (especially with the wrong type of circlip pliers - DOH!) but it's transformed the once noisy third gear over run noise and the change itself is more positive!!

I bought the shim but when I went to do the job I found out that the gearbox was sealed and didn't have the plastic cover to remove. It was all one metal housing.
My car is a 03 lcr.
I may have a shim kit for sale now lol!

Lol I loved my LCR but it was only ever a stop gap. I didn't do my test until i was 27 so I just needed something a bit less powerful to build up a bit of no claims on before I got something beasty :)

:p

I had a 320hp Evo GSR about 10 years ago and I really liked it but back then it was my 50 mile a day daily runner and after 1 year I realised that even though immensly fun I couldnt justify to the missus the 100 quid a week fuel just to work and back. So I bought a 450hp R32 GTR instead

Hi all wondering has anyone tried putting a shim on there o2m box?

browsing different sites the other night and found some useful information out on clutch creep.and whining noises from the o2m boxes.

There's obviously shims which get put in by gearbox specialists but this little mod is dead simple.

Cost me £10 for parts from vw
Takes about 15min's to do.

Mines an FZQ box on a 2004 plate

It only applies to later boxes which have a black round cover on the end.

Remove cover and behind u will c the end of the input shaft with a bearing surrounding it.
Theres a snap clip which needs to removed then put shim around, pull shaft towards you and reinsert snap clip. Easy job and seen as a must have to all o2m boxes.

Going to do mine tomorrow and will post up the outcome.
Wish me luck.

£10 fix compared to a £300 gearbox what a result.
Ino this is an old post but whats the difference between the o2m and fzq would the shim still fit the fzq as mine whines in third

Fzq is a varient of the 02m gearbox so yes it would fit.
Unless it's allready in there obviously, you never know.

Depends if it allready has the shim in there mate as I think you'll find some have it allready an some don't.
Not 100% sure if theres a way of knowing if you have it or not without taking the end cap off. If you even have the end cap?
